Next week I commence MLD & bandaging can anyone tell me what to expect? I've been told that I will not be able to drive.

Hi Lesley hope this helps you.

Your effected limbs will be measured.

Treatment is very light hand massage on your effected limbs which will help to drain the fluid.

The effected limbs will be bandaged with Lint and Crepe bandages several times so to compression the fluid which will be dispursed by weeing a lot.

Not to do much walking or driving as this will loosen the bandages and will be less effective.

At the end of treatment you will be amazed how the swelling will be reduced.

You will then be measured for compression garments.

Hi Alfie19

Thank you for your response. Do I keep the bandages on until the next appointment? I have 15 appointments, Monday to Friday for just over 3 weeks as some weeks I go alternate days. Forget to mention that it's my right arm, right hand back and collar-bone area that's affected.

Regards

Lesley

Yes the bandages must be kept on all day and night for them to work.

So having a bath or a shower could be difficult so you would need someone to help you

The consultant or nurse will change the bandages for you and re-apply new ones.

All the Best you can contact me any time.

Let us know how you get on and your results.

I have had the bindings on both my legs from knee down to toes..everyday for a week measurement taken along the limbs from toe to knee..the legs becoming less swollen..new bindings every day and at the end of the week the equivalent in fluid loss of 4/6 cans of coke..legs measured for compression stockings ordered from germany arriving next day..I could even see my ankles...now unfortunately due to leaky heart valve cant have the compression anymore. The nurses are wonderful

Very best wishes for success with bandaging and MLD, and do hope you get compression sleeves/gloves that work for you without discomfort. I now wear a Jobst sleeve and Sigvaris glove and use a combination of swimming, yoga and SLD to manage the swelling in my left arm and hand.

Hi Lesley

Hope your bandaging is going well - all good advice but just to clarify - you do need to keep the limb moving when you are bandaged as this will definitely help you lose more fluid. The driving bit is a health and safety issue as you will not have complete freedom of movement so could find it difficult to use the foot brake!

I agree with the lymph support network yes the bandages may slip but you will get much better results. I have had a couple of treatments and although I was off work as I work in a lab but i kept active taking and picking up the kids from school. Popping to the corner shop you do get some strange looks but you will feel much better for it. The whole point of the bandage is that the muscle movement acts as a natural pump. If the muscle isnt moving neither is the pump.
