Does anyone else experience this? When falling asleep, I suddenly jolt awake. My chest hurts and I wake up because I can hear myself taking a deep inhale. It seems to happen if I’m lying flat on my back and sometimes on my side. It usually happens if I sleep on my soft bed but I sleep well on my guest bed which is firmer. I’m not sure if it’s related but can’t figure out what it is. I do know that I have reflux so not sure if this is what I’m experiencing.

It could both. I also have ecig reflux and find my bed uncomfortable, I can sleep in it one or maybe two. I not knowing bought a pillow top mattress, it's too soft . It's ok for a while if I turn it. Acid reflux aggravates asthma. I can only sleep flat on my back I have fibromyalgia also. My doctor explained anyone of those make asthma act up. It's really scary. Mine feels like there is something heavy is on my chest. I mostly sleep in my recliner, that way I can adjust to what's comfortable for me. The first time it happened I though I was having a heart attack. Fibro had my chest swollen. I couldn't breathe and I was trying to burp all at the same time, horrable. Make sure you take your reflux medication and before going to bet drink something that makes you burp. A really cold coke does it for me something else may help. If anyone is around me I let them know I'm going to burp and it will not be pretty. It has to be loud and two or more is even better.

If it is caused by reflux you may want to talk to you doctor about a few simple things to do to help with that-avoiding certain foods, not lying flat to sleep, etc.
obstructive sleep apnea may also cause you to wake up suddenly and take a deep breath.
That’s interesting. Is there any way to tell the difference between the two? I don’t have it every night and probably wake up more often on certain nights. I know if I eat spicy food my chest hurts and I wake up more.
for sleep apnea/obstructive sleep; the doctor usually will ask you specific questions about your symptoms and lifestyle. There is a sleep study test they can do to evaluate your sleep and offer treatment based on results
both are common and treatable -when controlled it makes life feel a lot better. I would talk to my doctor about your symptoms and let them decide what might be going on and where to go from here. Feel better soon!
