As some of you will know I graduated from university in the summer with a 2:1 in Scots Law LLB. I start my Diploma in Legal practice in a few weeks time at the University of Dundee in Scotland.

I thought it would be useful to post some information about what to expect as a disabled student at University.

Firstly, get in touch with your University’s Disability Service team to discuss your support throughout your academic studies. see - dundee.ac.uk/studentservice... - every UK uni will have one.

My CP affects my ability to take notes in lectures and seminars so I have a note taker ,a scribe for examinations and a Dictaphone to record lectures.

I also tried assistive technology such as Dragon Naturally Speaking (dictation computer software) but I was not too successful with that. It works for some people but I found it very irritating since it would not recognise my accent!

I also had access to a laptop to use for essay’s and course work and buddy support to help me around campus including the library. It is always nice to know that you can talk to the disability department at anytime about anything!

During my 4 years at Dundee University the campus has changed.

The law school is more accessible with a fire proof lift, automatic door push pads on the floors I use and evac chairs on every floor. I was consulted before the changes were made which was refreshing.

So if you want to go to university the support and help is there.

The social life is great too.
