Fluctuating Alt

My ALT has fluctuated for the last eight years.

Goes from normal to abou 90 to 120. Then back to normal. Liver biopsy showed fatty liver. Fibroscan gone from 7.8 2018 to 5.8 this year.

Is it normal for ALT to go from high to normal so fluctuating all the time?

This is a very quiet site. Many people tend to use the “British Liver Trust” site.

May I ask please if you take any other medication or use skin creams? Nearly everything we take into our bodies or rub onto our skin passes through the liver at some point.

Whenever I have been prescribed a certain medication by the doctor, I always type into Dr Google the name of the drug followed by "Liver Damage" it will throw up any possible side effects. Certain drugs can cause liver enzymes to rise.

Do you happen to know what is causing your fatty liver? I ask this as normal once you’ve stopped taking whatever is causing it, the liver will repair its self and return to normal.

I personally don’t have much faith in the basic liver function test. In its self, it’s a good snapshot of how the liver is performing at that particular moment in time. A person could have liver cirrhosis or fibrosis and still show a perfect liver function test score.

An ELF test (Enhanced Liver Fibrosis) can show up any signs of fibrosis and even fatty liver. This test can give a much better picture as to what is going on.

Your GP should be looking to find the cause and be asking questions by ruling out what it’s not. A gallstone blocked in the bile duct would, for example, cause the liver enzymes to rise, and then fall again once to stone becomes free. By ruling out what it's not, hopefully, you’ll find what is causing this to keep on rising.

I hope this is some help, I’m sorry no one has responded to you sooner.

Good Luck

Richard
