Let’s try “Dry Covid” – lockdown is the time to kick our national alcohol habit for good

Just to let people know, that at the moment the QE Hospital in Birmingham have put liver transplants on hold for the time being, and the liver ward 727 is almost empty.

Because people are now in lock-down and drinking at home. 17% of people are now drinking more that the recognised safe drinking limits than they were before the start of this virus. This message needs to get out there. Soon there won't be help available for those with alcohol-related liver disease. But no one seems to think this is important. Prevention i s always better than cure.

Global deaths from alcohol outstrip Covid 19 by a factor of ten, so far this year. This is from research by Hamburg University.

When Governments find the resources and tackle this health crisis, hopefully we will put it behind us.

Sadly the situation around alcohol will remain the same.

Surely we can put health warnings on alcohol products and raise awareness of the dangers of drinking in excess.

Totally agree, it has even been said on the news that alcohol consumption has increased, of which I am not surprised at due to the boredom lockdown can have ,especially if there were regular drinkers in the home environment

My thinking is though Richard, even in closing down off licences the supermarkets and a lot of the corner shops sell alcohol so would it really have much of an impact,

I'm quite shocked to hear the QEHB liver unit is basically non functioning at present, I know my appt for may was put back to September..but what happens to the poorly ones desperate for a liver transplant, I would like to think that this was still available so to speak

Good call there Lynne, I would think they were doing so ? .. there has been a rise in isolate drinking, I have read twice now .

Of course Richard you are correct. What is worse in the boredom, loneliness and isolation there may be just too much temptation for some as well. Those who are trying so hard. I hope they keep their resolve. Jaycee
