A little musing.

I was pottering about today and an idle thought popped into my head.

We as individuals are at the pinnacle of our respective evolutionary ancestors trees. Think about that for a moment - they to a man or woman were survivors par excellence and if one link in that long chain had been broken, you and I would not be here. It's an awesome thought and worth considering when making choices for yourself, family or others. If you foul up you might be threatening the next link in the chain. So what could be the cain breaker? Well fairly obviously it's diet if you are a follower here.

So, a lot of time here is spent looking for substitutes of our favourite carby things, and therein lies the danger - for you will be, in most cases, be subject to emotional prompting - boredom for example, or a routine in front of the TV sans popcorn.

Now, our distant ancestors were just glad to have, say, one meal a day - or indeed every other day, so they weren't concerned about tearing open a packet of biscuits or bar of chocolate and might just have had to do with a few nuts or a bit of dried meat. I'm not advocating that of course (but thinking about it - yes I am!) but our recent antecedents such as my grandmother wouldn't recognise the average supermarket addictive treats we have become used to as staples.

So, musings, that's all, as I titled this piece, but recognising (and recognising is the key) what we regard as hunger, might just be using eating as a substitute for how we are feeling, and turning the clock back a little might stop us scratching around for something that should be off our radar.

I totally agree Mike. It's only recently in our evolutionary journey that we have had the wealth of foods available to us as now, and the luxury of three meals a day and the only hunting is up the aisles of the supermarket!

I was born during rationing, and I have looked on bemused at some of the strange things which have been offered for our sampling.

Back when I was a kid it was all stodgy suet puds, dumplings and spuds, with a little meat or cheese if we were lucky, but plenty of veggies; I never saw a steak till I was in my teens!

Yet we weren't overweight, we spent the days running around playing group games with the other children in the street, skipping, ball games, roller skating, cycling, pushcarts, going out of the village and constructing dens, with some bread and cheese or a sandwich and a bottle of water or squash.

We had far more freedom than children today, there weren't the constant warnings of predators, We could go to the local town unaccompanied on the bus, and roam the countryside if we so wished. We had Scouts and Guides for longer expeditions and Camps. Sheath knives were an important part of our uniforms, too! I'm sure we were better behaved too! We didn't go out spraying graffiti everywhere, or vandalising things for the thrill of it. The local police officer would bring us back home and our parents would punish us, if we were caught misbehaving.

I look back and feel nostalgic and quite sad that children are so constrained, kept in because of fear and left in front of the TV or a computer, where even now they are not safe from predators, and all they can do is play games or risk their safety on social media, putting on weight, following 'Influencers', not always to good effect. Always connected, by cellphones; It worries me.

My own children used to come camping with me, at camps of like minded individuals, who liked to see the children being children. At the low-tech sites they could be something like they used to be, bumped knees, scratched hands and all. They knew that if they had a problem and their own parents weren't around, they could come to any parent for help or a plaster!

Sorry for the wall of text!

Cheers, Midori
