The Politics of Diet

I saw this on Twitter this morning- twitter.com/fleroy1974/stat...

Apparently there is a huge move to force the vegan/vegetarian agenda on us all. Personal choice may be at risk. If that's the way you want to eat, I'm not going to tell you that you can't. I thank God for forums and other platforms like this where people can find answers that aren't driven by politics. Looks like many lives have been changed for the better here. Thank you, HU!!

This stuff scares the living daylights out of me, for reasons I've expounded on (at length!) in various other posts.

I completely agree that if people want to go vegan, that's up to them. I don't think it's particularly healthy, but I do get that some people just don't like animal products, or aren't comfortable with them. That's fine. They'll always be in a smallish minority.

I'm not quite sure what's behind this "we all need to go vegan" crusade. I can't tell if it's malice or ignorance; but if they have their way, the ecological and social consequences will be profound and horrific. I'm just hoping that the dictatorial instincts of the few will be overridden by the pigheadedness of the masses.

Sounds like ignorance based on faulty information. They think they're informed. Rather like the Ancel Keyes cholesterol/heart debacle. They honestly believe that cows are a major contributor to global warming, so they're saving the environment. I always resented the beef checkoff program taking our money at the livestock auction, but with this mess looming, I'm not so sure it isn't a good thing now.

Ignorance does seem to be the order of the day - as you say, the "experts" just don't know what they don't know.

I wouldn't want to be a farmer in the US right now. You're assaulted from both sides - the government with their agenda, and the save-the-earth types with theirs.

I'm all for saving the earth. In fact I've devoted my career to it. However I do make the effort to find out what works, and why it works. But how do you explain to someone who doesn't even have a highschool grasp of physics, chemistry or ecology that burping cows are - in the grand scheme of things - a net positive?

The truly frightening thing is that their theories are superficially plausible (a bit like "fat makes you fat, so if you want to lose weight, eat less fat"). And that means politicians latch onto them and get that manic gleam in their eyes. And it's all downhill from there.

Did you see the Gary Fettke interview?

in reply to Stoozie

No, interview with whom? I'll see if I can find it.

It's a long video, but well worth watching. The basic theme is that the low-fat herbivore diet arose from early 20th century religious memes, as popularized by some rather odd characters like J H Kellogg. I came to the exact same conclusion from my own research. Ancel Keys was really just riding the wave:

And also read Belinda Fettke's findings in her blog entitled Lifestyle Medicine: Where did all the meat go? isupportgary.com/articles/t.... The vegan movement has more about selling processed food products than saving the planet. We need livestock grazing grass as grass meadows are perenial plants with roots going deep into the soil and holding moisture. Livestock rebuild soil not poison soil in the way annual cash crops do.

Couldn't agree more. The processed-food companies are loving this. It's another bonanza of cheap-to-make, profitable rubbish, like the low-fat thing all over again.

I had to laugh when you said..the vegan movement is more about selling processed foods.. am another one that couldn't agree with you more. In fact that has been my thoughts for sometime now.

Will do. I had read a little of her stuff awhile ago. Amazing, isn't it?

Thanks for the link. So it's all one big happy package, huh? I will listen this afternoon.

This doesn’t surprise me... it’s being pushed on the public from all angles at the moment. I had just assumed there was some sort of top down social engineering approach coming from somewhere. Each to their own as far as consumption of meat I guess, but I’ve inadvertently bought a couple of vegan products in the past and all seems highly processed. Not the route I want to go down.
