Feeling unsure

I’m not enjoying the LCHF experience at all. I really don’t like the feel and taste of high fat. I need to be able to have easy cold lunches for work (that isn’t chia seed pudding 🤢). And my house now smells like a deep fat fryer!

So BBQ tea today, I think that will work with LCHF? I’ll have a go at making pies that I can eat cold and hope I can go the distance. Wondering if frittata is a good option. So many questions but I don’t want to sound like a wingebag. I keep telling myself that all you lovely folk are getting on well with it so I should too. Got a run today, first one with carb free fuel. I wonder if it will feel different. Thank you and sorry if you have read this. Onwards and upwards.

I understand your frustration.

The first thing to realise is that everyone is different, so you need to find your right path.

For example. I don't eat breakfast, so that cuts out one decision, and makes what I eat all the more enjoyable when I break my fast at midday.

If you aren't eating bread or rice for example, then having a bit of boiled potato and carrot or whatever green vegetable you fancy with a liberal amount of butter (and who doesn't like mashed spud with butter) along with your protein of choice will still get you where you want to be. My choice of carb is often a pulse portion (kidney beans/chickpeas or even half a can of baked beans). Have a look at Michael Mosley's recipes. He's been all over the newspapers recently with his Fast 800 diet and tweak where necessary.

Maintaining full-on ketosis is very difficult and unsustainable for most people, but don't lose heart, you will find what works for you.

Thank you. This is very helpful advice. I think its going to be a big learning curve for me.

I am totally with you and find Mike's reply really helpful. I still have carbs, just a lot less and have more nuts, avocados etc. So not properly on this diet but using some of the principles to tweak my eating. A lot of the recipies for keto I find yuk so sympathise!

Thanks Oolong, and is it working for you?

Yes, so long as I don't fall off the wagon and hit the chocolate - ooops!

I can strongly recommend (unfortunately) Montezumas 100% cocoa sugar free chocolate flavoured with orange oil for emergency use only :))

If you’re in UK Morrison’s sell it just under £3 a bar but it lasts me ages as it takes a while to melt in mouth so one piece usually enough :))

Perhaps salads will make you feel more like you are eating the fresh stuff you are used to? Tuna mayo with a little thinly sliced red onion on a rocket salad?

What foods are you hankering for?

Which foods feel too fatty at the moment? If e.g ricotta is too rich for your tastes at the moment, I find Buffalo Mozzarella a lighter feeling but still LCHF choice.

Tell us more and I'm sure we can help :)

Thank you. I think the chorizo and creamed cabbage for tea last night was a leap to far. It was swimming (literally) in grease and fat. I couldn’t eat it. I think you’re right and The AwfulToad too. I need to use salad and veg to find my balance. Thank you.

As you've realised, it's a learning curve! We've all been there, and it's really just a question of trying this and that and finding out which (new) foods you like and which ones you don't.

You will very quickly get used to adding fat into your diet. I didn't like bacon at all prior to getting into LCHF, or any kind of fatty meat (eg., chicken legs). I can now honestly say I enjoy them, and I find excessively lean meat tasteless and leathery. Your tastes can and will change if you persevere.

If you find that your meals are too greasy you probably just don't have enough veg. Think in terms of replacing starchy veg with non-starchy ones and you can't go far wrong. For example, instead of having potatoes with your meal, have some roasted mixed veg (onions, peppers, mushrooms) with some olive oil and butter.

Thanks, I think you’re right, more veg and salad will maybe balance the load. I’ll keep trying. Thank you

I felt the need to come back and say that if the nausea persists after eating fat, then do pop to the GP as that can be a sign that your gallbladder isn't quite working correctly.

I also wanted to check, is it possible you are still having portion sizes of the type it took to fill you up when you were eating low fat foods? It's juat that it takes much less of this type of food to achieve satiety, so if you are dutifully polishing off a plateful that used to be ok, you may feel queasy as it's now a bit much.

Come and update us anyway :)

Rosiepug in reply toStoozie

Thanks Stoozie, the nausea is improving a little, I think I may have been eating low fat for so long it’s been a shock to the system whenever I ate it.

I’m finding I can eat far less (25% ish reduction).

I have to say, a few days in and my system seems to be appreciating the diet change. Chia seeds get sprinkled on almost every meal, I’m conscious of keeping up my fibre intake.

Hi how did your run go ? Have you tried scotch eggs for "on the go" I take them to work and theyre tasty ! :-) x

Rosiepug profile image
Rosiepug in reply toLytham

I did the run 🎉 it was hard going and I was slower than usual but it was my longest yet so chuffed with myself! I love scotch eggs but they have breadcrumbs? I’m thinking I may take boiled eggs with salad. Trying to find a smoothie recipe cos I love those for lunch.

Wow longest yet? Thats brilliant ! Yeah they do have breadcrumbs which is not ideal but they are still low in carbs, boiled egg salad sounds better ! :-) x

Easy portable lunches are boiled eggs, cheese, chicken legs (skin on). Also leftovers from previous evening, cook an extra portion of salmon, or when I make chilli, instead of serving with rice I bake some loaded into halved peppers with grated cheese over, and do extra to keep for next day’s lunch. Take a salad with a tin of tuna or sardines. I use coconut oil for frying or roasting and I haven’t noticed any “deep fat fryer” smells around the house 🙂

Rosiepug profile image
Rosiepug in reply toPandQs

Thank you PandQs, Good idea with coconut oil, I’ve been using butter which totally explains the smell. Like the chilli loaded peppers idea, I like it rolled in lettuce leaves too. There aren’t usually any leftovers in our house, even when I cook extra! So I’m going for the salads lunch idea and I’m working on creating a LCHF smoothie because I really enjoy a smoothie lunch.

I use extra virgin olive oil for everything - don't like cocnut and butter is too rich. We've always used it but now on lchf I can indulge in oodles!

Rosiepug profile image
Rosiepug in reply tocheritorrox

Thank you cheritorrox. Not really sure why I didn’t think of that myself since it’s what I’ve always used before! 🙄doh! I think I need to relax about all this a little.

cheritorrox in reply toRosiepug

I went thru all that too ... didn't ever really stick to below 20 but still got there so chill a bit!

I also don't like the taste of to much fat. I can live happily with just a little bit on a steak, pork chop or bacon.

Done away with all but one oil and dont use butter and fats for cooking... olive oil is a gift from God so we treat it with respect.

I treat it with respect by indulging in lots of it - made locally so supporting my Pueblo!

Sounds wonderful where you live.

I had an olive tree growing in a pot, but now it's my walking stick.

Really nice you can get your olive oil locally.

Hi Rosiepug

Pies as far as I know are not suitable on LCHF due to flour content and frittata is made with potatoes which are also a no no.

The fats which are good for you are contained in oily fish eg salmon, mackerel, herring , avocado, fullfat greek yoghurt, nuts, seeds, butter, olive oil, olives, deep fat frying is not so good as cooking oil eg sunflower oil are processed.

The 8 week blood sugar diet recipe book sets out the foods to eat and those to avoid and has some tasty recipes and photos to inspire. Also you can find on the internet the Glycaemic index of various foods. The higher the score the quicker the carb changes to glucose in the blood stream and is therefore to be avoided.

Maybe take a look

Best wishes and I hope the run went well

Thank you the GI info is certainly something I need to look at. I love avocados so on a winner there. I was looking at the low carb pies on the diet doctor website, they use substitute for flour. Just need to find a supplier locally. The book sounds interesting, I’ll look it up. Thank you for your help.
