Does having ASP affect the way your body reacts to the common cold or other common illness? or will it simply over react each time?

Hi Clare, I found that when I get a cold or worse a sore throat my APS symptoms go into overdrive and I have a really poorly time with brain fog, wooly head, memory problems, migraine, joint pains, balance issues etc. It's like when my body has to produce antibodies to fight any other infection the autoimmune problems I have go into overdrive. I don't know if that's "normal" but that's what seems to happen for me.

Hi

This is a very interesting subject. I have always had real problems when I get a cold etc and usually end up with a chest infection or even puemonia. It hadnt occoured to me that it could be APLS. I will continue reading this thread with great interest

ok that make me feel abit better about the whole cold thing. I've felt horrid for four days now with what is simply a common cold and I have never in my life felt this bad with a cold. I think it must be my system in over drive I will just let it run its course and ride out the cold but i have to say it doesn't help when you can't take anything to help either.

Sharon and paddy do your system return to normal with time? I would like to think i can return to my normal old self in good time. As never normal have any problem or symtoms from my APS.

Hi Clare,

sometimes it did some times i was just left with a flare up even though the cold had gone sorry but i think it depends on how long and how strong the cold/flu is

Hi, I react really badly to any bug that comes my way, the worse being sore throat viruses or strep just about finishes me off... however I never actually get the bug, not had a sore throat for twenty years. I have psoriatic arthropathy so I come out from head to toe in psoriarsis if strep is around, a cold makes me very ill. However I have overlapping diseases so hard to tell where one begins and the other one ends. but migraine is an almost daily feature currently. Mary F

Oh yes! Colds tend to hit me for 6 and have finally learnt just to give in go home from work and go to bed, I've not been told not to take anything for it so usually dose myself up with paracetemol but lemsip is given a very wide birth (as the last time I took lots of that whilst I was still on warfarin I had to have lots of vitamin K to counteract the damage I'd done myself!!!) but now on clexane and have not yet had a cold!)

I thought Paracetamol was okay to take when expereincing colds or headaches....??? Help!

Hi just a thought. Do you drink less or about the same amount as usual, when you are not well, or more? I think that dehydration may be the cause of some of my symptoms

So if you are sweating are you taking more fluids?

Hi, bugs do tend to knock me for six nowadays. I get everything far worse than anyone else in the family and i do my best to avoid people with bugs! I too have taken cold and flu tablets when on warfarin and then stopped when the INR went high, so now i admit defeat and go home and rest until better.

Try Antihistamines. They worked wonders for me a few a week ago, when i started with a cold.

I usually get the migraine / v.nasty headaches lasting for 3-4 days whenever I get a cold and sometimes cold sores but other than that I am no different to my 'normal self'. I am aware that even though i have APS all the time, that I am relatively lucky and dont have many of the ongoing problems that others do so I dont know if this has anything to do with it?!?!

Unfortunately, any little virus that affects my family members for a couple days can knock me down for a month or sometimes more. It's like any time there is something "real" for my immune system to attack, it goes nuts on every other part of me as well. Needless to say, I am hypervigilent about avoiding illnesses, and in winter, I have been known to hardly leave my home if something is going around. :(

Infections seem to have an effect on my INR level.

Hi Clare

I work 2 days a week in a school and its difficult to avoid germs, particularly at this time of year. I'm off work (2 weeks) at the moment with flu. This time last year I was off for 7 weeks with swine flu. Like the others say, your body just can't fight illness off. Luckily the school haven't said anything about all the time I miss, but there's not a lot I can do, apart from give up the job which I don't want to do. Take care x
