Hi there, this can be a common problem, and it can come and go, do you have a good rheumatologist looking after you or haematologist as they may be able to help you pace yourself to avoid boom and bust, and also tweak your medication, some do better on Plaquenil or similar. It is worth bringing to an appointment and also talking about your anticoagulation also, some times if you can't get an urgent appointment there may be a nurse attached to your local clinic you may have some expertise with this also. I have a multi amount of disease and I certainly flare all the time and it makes me less effective at most things. Kind Regards. Mary F x

Hi,I know exactly what you mean.I started a return to nursing course at the local Uni, but found it very difficult to concentrate, let alone doing all the homework, so had to give it up in the end.I didn't know what was wrong with me then, but now I'm on Aspirin I seem to be a lot more focused and able to retain info.Like Mary F says maybe your anticoagulation. Needs to be reviewed. Hope that's of some use. Regards Elfie

Hi

Newbie here. Yours was the first post I read and I can really empathise. If anyone has any specific, practical suggestions to help with focus I would be really grateful. Meanwhile, you may be interested in the ADD magazine site as it has lots of useful info on this and similar subjects that can apply to APS too. They have free webinars as well: additudemag.com

Best of luck!

I know exactly how you feel. I was a straight A student and couldnt focus. I find i have tine where i just get so tired that everything overwhelms me. Sleep didnt help, exercise didnt help. I asked the doctors about it and they said i would something to thin my blood but with me i have another autoimmune disease where my platelets drop low so taking a blood thinner is risky. Sometimes you just need to tweak you diet i found this to be helpful.

Thanks for all of the responses. I'm currently seeing a hematologist and on coumadin therapy which is always up and down. The problem I have is I dive an hour and half to work and back so my days are 11-12 hours then I'm home to take care of my son since my husband is working at night. I've read you need to modify your days but unfortunately I have to run like this 5 days a week. I do have some good weeks then I for like two weeks I'm drained and can't focus. I will definitely read the ADD articles thank you. As far as diet I am started to modify now to see if that helps with my issues. So frustrating!!

Hi, I've suffered with this since I was about ten (now 36). It must be terrible to develop it later, as it second nature to me to plan life around it and I'm sure that's not possible in every job.

What you need to do (and it will be hard at first) is to really utilize those good times. Don't run around trying to do everything, use clearheaded times to plan. I've picked jobs that lend themselves to this (presently teacher) as I needed to be in control of my schedule. Depending how your job break down in time (term for me) set out your targets and the goal you need to get there, differentiate which tasks you absolutely could not manage on a bad day, and those you could do on worst. If possible, revert to mentally easy job if you feel the clouds descend - those boring bits that just have to be done, but you can manage on autopilot. I start each time block with plan A, B and C. Its not a waste, as the plans not followed will be used another day. Also with house work, plan what you need to do and do the hardest job you can manage without pushing yourself.

Not having time for yourself can make it worse, how about an audio book during commute rather than stressing about what you have to do.

Finally, how ever much you plan there are still days when the fog stops you managing essential tasks. All you can do is minimise pain when you have to fight it (riding it leaves me with a dull head ache, fighting it leaves me in serious pain and exhausted). These things work for me: glasses - both sun and electric light make it worst. Chewing gum - don't know why, maybe it just stops the jaw clench, but it seems to calm vision. Moving - yes I want to sit down, but I need to get up to fight the fog - pacing usually. Sweet drinks - essential, but I personly lose fine moter skills, so tea from a flask with straw or juice from bikers bottle, I prefer tea, but keep emergency fanta bottle.

As it seems everyone suffers from this, perhaps someone could start a tip / strategy section?
