Hi my name is Lisa and I'm 44 and I've just been diagnosed with hidradentis suppurativa long term. I was wondering if you know if you can claim disability or benfit for this disease in uk? I be grateful of any help.

I am in Canada so can't speak to UK eligibility criteria. However I feel it is a conversation to have with your own doctor as they will have a good idea of weather they can support your application for disability benefit based on your own story and suffering because I assume you'll require a medical letter as part of application. I think it is based on impact of disease (any) on an individual not by diagnosis. Take care and good luck. Thank you for sharing your experience. I also have had this condition since age 14 , now 50.

Thank you I think I might do some more research into it first as not sure where I stand in the uk. It must have been awful to have it at such a young age mine started a year ago. I wish you well. 🤗

Yes mine was more severe in my 20s 30s and very triggered by hormones and weight gain....surgeries to remove fissures in groin and underarms , meds, injections, pain and fatigue. I have a great Dermatologist and that has helped tremendously. The last 5 years it is so much better as I'm getting older and constantly have to manage my weight, it is interesting that yours has emerged in your 50s so wondering what is triggering yours. I never ever knew anyone else who had it which is why I love this site. My heart goes out to you...it is a chronic and persistent condition but with good medical treatment and healthy lifestyle there is hope☺

I apologize as I was incorrect regarding your age and timing of diagnosis. I see you are 44... how long have you had this?

Hi I've had it over a year and went to doctors as it wasn't going away and did test on my back and fourth to the hospital and then to dermatologist and that's was when I got diagnosed long term.ive got it under my right armpit and left of inside bum cheek and lip of Vagina area I've been given hibiclen and some tropical lotion which touch wood its eased it but as I've got it for life I was just wondering how you go about claiming disability or some sort of benefits but I guess I have to ask my gp.

Hi i also suffer from this and no i dont think you can claim. I recieve pip highest daily living for sth else not related but going by the questions on the form you fill out it has nothing to do with this condition whether its for life or not. Sorry... but i dont think they'd consider it.

Hi Nicola thanks for the reply it's a shame as its long term and there no way you can work with this disease due to the condition and places its in so to speak. I have made friends who live in USA and Canada and they are class as disability and get allowance . It's unfair in the uk how are people ment to cope with this. Any ways thank you

You can get pip if your condition is in late stages constant and medication like 3000 milogrames of paracetamol every day and long term antibiotics I have been takin for over seven years pip assessors give no credit as they don't understand what it is and we are a minority of 1 per cent of the U.K. Their unlikely to be considerate including this Painfull smelly debilitating chronic disease

I'm sorry to hear that. Yup, it can be nasty and hit the most sensitive of spots. I wish you good support from GP.

You cannot claim any kind of disability for this which I find super annoying as it is so emotionally debilitating when they are at their sorest and the effect it has on your self-esteem and mental state is very damaging...especially for those of us who have suffered for years, I personally have suffered for around 8 years and I am only 33!!

It depends on what stage of hs you are at it may help you if you visit the hedronitis trust and check your symptoms with the 4 stages of hs it is horrible I will not lie but you have to learn to control it you need to first establish the stage of your condition
