How did you find out you had Hepatitis C? I don't understand why doctors wouldn't treat it. I just found out I had auto-immune hepatitis on June 16th. Doctors started treatment immediately. Of course, by the time I went to the hospital my skin and eyes were yellow and I had ascites and was very fatigued. Luckily no liver scarring or permanent damage. So if doctors find out a person has this disease early before such drastic symptoms the attitude is to wait?! If I had known earlier I would have started on a healthier diet sooner than I did and I would have been researching what herbs and supplements I should take to strengthen my liver. I probably would have taken homeopathics, gone to an energy healer and tried acupuncture. These are steps I am taking now but now I am on Prednisone and Imuran so must still wait for my liver enzymes to decrease to normal (They were in upper 1000s and bilirubin at 20.) before I can try some of these other approaches. You don't want to wait until til then. Hopefully, doctors are at least monitoring your bloodtests.
Hi Wendy,
I'm 61,have had Hep C 35 years,diagnosed six years ago.
I've self treated since then with MilkThistle,Tumeric,Alpha lipoic acid and blueberry leaf.
No alchohol, foods containing reservatrol as this causes increased replication as do sugars which feed all viruse,or red meat as high in iron.
I soon got used to healthier/liver friendly way of living,
Wish you every success with your recovery.
jenny has some excellent self treat tips wendy, remember hep c is something that has no actual harmful effects on a third of the infected. The key is not the virus but its effect on you. Are your liver tests normal? With normal ALTs? Is your scan normal also? If so you are perfectly well and this is why treatment is not offered. Further depending on where you are they may offer ribavirin and interferon which will make you much iller than the HCV has. The body often does a great job of managing this virus and your team should explain all this better but they seldom have the time. However as common products like alcohol and painkillers have the ability to wake the virus up they should keep you under 6 monthly observation, but you need to see that each visit your results are saying perfectly healthy. where are you, as this really affects the advice and availability of things.
