Tips for the newly diagnosed.

First off I would advise being kind to yourself and taking good care of your liver. Little or no alcohol, good food and plenty of sleep. Help your body to help you. One of my nurses answered, when I asked about the occasional alcoholic drink "if you want one, have one but be aware that your liver works hard constantly ridding the body of toxins, converting food to energy and literally 100's of other things. Everytime you have alcohol or take drugs of any kind, your liver has to process them and you're increasing the load it has to do. It never complains until it's about to give out and by then it's too late. Just bear that in mind and be kind to it because it's damaged and it will keep chugging away keeping you fit until it's on it's last legs. Have the occasional drink but think of it as just one extra job you're asking your liver to do". I've always remembered that and although I do have the occasional drink, it is just that - occasional. I don't take painkillers very often unless I really need to and I try to eat well. I'm told my liver is even showing signs of repairing itself so all good.

Also ask your doctors and nurses at the clinic as many questions as you can. Write them down so you don't forget and read as much literature as you can get your hands on. Knowledge is power and ultimately, apart from the treatments you're receiving it's your body and your responsibility to keep it safe and well wherever possible.

If the treatment makes you feel crap just keep telling yourself it's not forever and it will come to an end eventually.
