Last couple of months, strong smell of nicotine, some coughing, but even that familiar 'taste' in my mouth?

I gave up smoking about thirty years ago, I only smoked for about eight years, but after giving up my weight went up about five stone, from 12 and a half to 17 and a half stone, which I have never really lost. March last year, diabetes 2 metformin 1000mg! The last three months, all I taste is nicotine, a slight cough, nothing spectacular, I live on my own, the previous owners of the house were heavy smokers, slight redecoration since I moved in 18 years ago. Surely it can't be the old fumes from then, I can taste? I thought is was but the nicotine taste is definitely stronger in the last couple of months now all over the house!
