Diet & Polycystic ovary syndrome

Hi.

After years of living a sedentary lifestyle and eating large amounts of unhealthy food I have decided (with a GIANT nudge from my GP!) to jump on the healthy eating bandwagon and shift some weight!

My GP advised me that dropping my BMI to within the healthy range and eating a healthier diet will not only help my overall health, but improve my mental health and hopefully alleviate some of the symptoms of my Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.

Have any of you had success in managing symptoms of PCOS through diet and/or weight loss? If so could you offer any tips?

Much appreciated,

Kay

Please count your carbs for your meals and/or snacks during the day/evening. Lower carb intake helps with PCOS and Diabetes issues. Please ask your doctor if you can get them to give you a sliding scale on how much you have to have at each meal and snack.

A good resource on PCOS might be wholefoodsplantbasedhealth..... Amongst other authoritative pages it will refer you to Dr Neil Barnard's take on the subject at thekindlife.com/blog/2013/0...

If you are not used to it weight with a whole food plant based diet is very easy. There is absolutely no calorie counting, you just eat as much as you like until you are satiated. It is slow, steady and sustainable in the long term with proven good long term health outcomes.

Finally if you want to know exactly what the science says about PCOS there is a video by Dr Michael Greger at nutritionfacts.org/video/be.... All he does is report on the science. Every word is properly sourced (just click the "sources cited" tab) and you can check out the research yourself. If you are not used to reading research perhaps you can ask your doctor to take a look at them!

Whatever this video refers to the Low AGE dietary approach as being important, with research showing benefits withing two months.

My daughter improved her overall health and reduced many of her PCOS symptoms ( but not the excess hair ) by cutting out processed foods as much as possible, eating lots of vegetables and less meat and more pulses. She lost a lot of weight and looked great.

Go for it

I suffer from PCOS and joined slimming world. It was amazing. The Lb melted off and as I lost I noticed my symptoms were a lot less frequent and my periods evan started to get more regular. I fell off the wagon last year so have gained most back and I can deffinately feel the difference. I’m rejoining again soon so I deffinately recommend it. Hope this helps

Hi, I joined Slimming World six weeks ago and have just lost my first stone. Am feeling more energetic and healthier and happy. At 59 years old am getting concerned re: getting type two diabetes as increased risk due to PCOS. Hopefully weight liss/healthy diet will work. Also suffer with excess hair.
