i have suffered with osteoarthritis for about 5 years and been fat for about 30! my general health has been ok, but the arthritis restricted my walking and i gradually decreased it to doing virtually none, apart from at work.
i have recently had a total hip replacement, which is fantastic, but find i cannot walk like would like, guessing due to the years of inactivity! i found myself stuggling today at 2300 steps. at 1500 i had to sit down, and this was nothing to do with my surgery.
i feel annoyed at myself for getting like this and more so embarrassed really at what i can only achieve. i know i have to increase my activity, but really could do with a plan.
anyhow! any tips welcomed. cheers, jan

Hello Jan and welcome. Dont get annoyed with yourself at least you are trying to do what you can. I'm not medically trained but I think to do a little often is good. Have you thought of joining a health walk group near you. You can do what you can. Our local one does 20 min walks it's not great big hikes so may be worth looking into. You have made a start so just try and build on that slowly. Could you contact your doctors surgery and see what help is available to you. Ali
I have walked with my local group before, but even then i was so unfit i just couldnt do it. they did suggest a short cut, but i was too embarrassed, lots of old people and walking sticks! so i did the whole thing, it nearly killed me! i think what you suggest is the obvious thing, start slow and often. appreciate your time. thank you.
did my 15 minutes again today! yey! it has been a beautiful day here.
managed to look up rather than at the floor, for most of it, so so much more enjoyable! feel ive made progress just doing that.
; )
Like you 'iamdetermined'. Doing what we can... when we can... is so important. Take your time and enjoy your walk. I accidentally washed my pedometer in the machine again ... so now l concentrate on each step but do not count them. I use my cane or walker depending on how l feel. Be Safe & be proud of each step you take. Granni B
thank you for your reply. i have actually forgotten how to enjoy walking its been so long! i have to force myself to look up from the floor! slow and steady, i'll get there, thank you.
Welcome and well done for getting out there. I'm sure if you take it slow and steady doing a little bit everyday you will see improvement and start doing more steps and this will help with your weight too. 2300 steps is good as you haven't walked a great deal for a while, so don't feel embarrassed or annoyed, best foot forward 👍🏼 Good luck.
