My husband was fitted with a voice box to his trach today for an hour. After ten days of mouthing my name, the names and ages of our sons, where he works, football teams, with the voice box on he is speaking incoherently and not recognising/saying names. I cant understand the decline since the voice box was fitted. Is this to be expected? They are giving him drugs to help with delirium and he looks a bit spaced out. I raised this with him and they said it was because he was agitated and they are continuing with drugs. His injury is on the left side.

Hello, sorry to hear this. We have had similar sorts of experiences in the past. My husband went from speaking to being unable to speak in a really short few weeks. I am still determined it had to do with a medication which they started giving to him. I would push a bit harder on this is if you feel it's the case. Is he agitated because of the voice box? Was he agitated before? It seems too coincidental maybe and there is something to be said for gut feelings? Would it be worth contacting headway to ask whether this is common? It's such a tricky path that we're on. We don't have the knowledge and have to accept what we're told by professionals. I understand how frustrating that is. We have found that they are not necessarily correct all the time.
