Hi there! I have both but I had my shunt fitted after a failed ventriculostomy which my neurosurgeon implied was the normal progression of treatment…I live with both so I would have the conversation with your surgeon it’s gotta be worth an ask…Kate 😀
What age did you have the ventriculostomy ? How long did it last ? Have you only had the 1 vp shunt op or there been revisions when its failed ?
Hi there again! I consider myself to be lucky as I lived a normal life/education with hydrocephalus undiscovered til age 13 then until then apart from the occasional focal seizure again til I was around 43. My memory is shocking so I have to check my facts…
My brain ‘decompensated’ my hydrocephalus after 46 yrs(inc a 20yr career as a staff nurse producing a daughter and travelling the world) of dealing with it when I had the ETV and subsequent VP shunt a year later. The main symptom of my hydro is poor balance and reduced mobility but as my husband reminds me I am still alive! Sorry if l waffled… Message me if you need more answers and I will try to help Kate😀
Thank you for your replys.Your case is not to dissimilar to mine. After my 3rd ventriculostomy at 20 i studied a computing diploma. Then qualified as an hgv driver and did that job for a few years, before it failed and ended up needing the vp shunt. After that i studied tiling and managed to run a wee business for myself.Only after multiple shunt revisions it all took its toll.Getting a bit older also prob doesnt help. But works not really been possible past few year.2017 shunt revision.again in 2020.again in 2021 where i also took the brain infection. But after the first op at 20 i bounced back,n aswell as woking away had a great social life and went umpteen holidays. Was still ok to enjoy nights out n a few drinks etc.Right now im wondering if ill ever really be able to enjoy all that again.Yip my balance has took a hit also i often notice i have random wee stumbles and reach to grab onto something to stabalise myself.By mobility do you mean walking or just moving your body around the house in general.i notice things like getting up out a bed or bath etc are not as easy as tyey once were.Asking my go to refer to physio to see if they can help any there.anything you advise trying ? Im now also noticing wee things like using my fingers to type on my phone etc feels different like a coordination thing.maybe brain n fingers etc not working together so good.
