Hey Daisy,

Hypoxic brain injuries occur when the brain doesn't get the oxygen it needs. In my experience as a healthcare professional they can occur from a wide variety of things such as; massive blood loss, a stroke where a blood clot blocks a blood vessel preventing the oxygenated blood from reaching the brain, cardiac arrest (although they are more common in out of hospital cardiac arrests where the person does not have trained bystanders preforming CPR and adequately perfusing the body with oxygenated blood). There's really allsorts of reasons why they happen but the main point is that there's a lack of oxygen in the brain and it becomes damaged. I think it takes about 4 minutes. As for the effects, I don't work with people with brain injuries much so maybe someone else can advise on the typical symptoms but I imagine it's like any other brain injury (completely different for everyone). Speech, language, motor functions, ability to eat, behaviour, all bodily functions can be disrupted in a brain injury depending on what part of the brain has become hypoxic. Hope this helps.
