Tastebuds Shot

Hi, Had a sah May 17 My taste for food is not good but sometimes I can taste food better some days than other days. Has anyone else had this problem, if so, can anything I do to improve it? Thanks in advance.

Hi Wagec. I started with corrupted taste a couple of weeks prior to my SAH and later learned how widely it's connected to brain injury.

My distorted taste of red meat hasn't improved in the past 8 yrs since the SAH (still disgusting) but with time I feel like there must've been some sensory compensation as the taste of certain foods is now as I remember it.

It's certainly hit and miss in both taste and smell for me, but whereas it was a major issue for the first couple of years, I don't give it a thought now unless someone else brings the subject up.

After various neuro and ENT tests and advice on 'acceptance' I decided on my own experiment. I honestly believe that a persistent 'Mind over matter' approach helped, in that visualising/memorising tastes of the food, as I was eating it, helped to re-establish links between brain and tastebuds !

Hi, hope had SH 14 months ago and lost most of my sense of smell and taste, but I can smell things that aren’t there 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t bother with dinner often as it tastes of nothing, sorry I can’t help x

hi love yes i cant taste smell or cry 6years on and the thing is nobody believe s me same as brain damage because i always try to look ok ive put hottest chilli paste in mouth in front of daughter ok my lips felt a bit like to much sun ive ate a whole onion in front of my daughter no tears no taste i dont no if someone taking the advantage of my kindness if someone was sending there dog ove to me because they say he has wind problems or ill here her say he stinks just passed wind knowing i cant smell ? is that good or bad gone all over the place love sorry hope your smell comes back love hug x

Hi my SAH left me with little taste or smell - at first it really bothered me but have come to terms with it. It seems that some days are better than others ... hope you make some improvements - however you’re not alone - small comfort I know x

My husbands sense of taste and smell nerve was cut during his fall and initially he could not smell or taste anything at all but its 10 years since now and just occasionally he gets a faint waft of cigarette smoke or polish

I feel it is tragic not to be able to taste his favourite food or smell lovely smells ...very sad indeed .

Same for my husband. It sounds unimportant compared to other problems, but it does upset him, especially as they said it might come back in the first year. Apparently there is no chance though, if the nerve is severed.
