Hi,

On Tuesday of last week I got hit on the back of my head by my car boot (it came up when I thought it was closing). I ended up going to hospital on Friday as still had really bad headaches. After a ct scan, lumber puncture, mri and 4 days in hospital, the only thing they could find was a broken nose and a small chip in one of my neck bones.

It's now been 2 days since I came home and over a week since the accident, but I still have a head ache feel sick and dizzy. Does anyone know how long this can last for.

Also the hospital consultant gave me a sick note for 12 days but says I need to see my gp before I can go back to work (I work as a career, so quite physical). He seemed to suggest that I could be off for longer than the 12 days. The issue is there are some inconsistencies between my sick note and my discharge paper work:

1) my discharge form says I wasn't issued with a sick note when I was and I fear the Dr won't issue me a new one if needed.

2) discharge form says the main finding was a viral infection but sick note says head injury and dizzyness.

The issue is the consultant who did my sick note did not write my discharge papers as these were done after I left and given to my partner when he went t pick up the prescription for my pain killers which hadn't been done either before I left.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Xx

Phone your consultant's secretary (hospital switchboard will put you through) and explain the problem. Specialist's secretaries are very efficient and knowledgeable so she should be able to arrange for a duplicate sick note.

Good luck Rosebud.... Cat x

Hi Cat,

Thanks for the reply. My sick note is fine, it's better discharged papers I could do with. Any advice on what to do here?

Regards

Same really. Anything concerning your discharge can be dealt with by either the ward sister or the consultant's secretary. No one else can guess where an administration error originates or who's responsible, so best contact the hospital to get to the root of the issue.

Thanks Cat,

You've been most helpful. I suppose I'm just worrying as I don't know how I'm going to progress. It's Neen over a week now and I'm still in a lot of pain and getting dizzy and feeling sick. Xx

Your brain will be attempting to heal but it's a very slow process. You can avoid unnecessary worry by accepting that pain, dizziness, maybe nausea and confusion, are all 'normal' symptoms after concussion.

Recovery periods vary so much from person to person that it's a 'wait & see' scenario I'm afraid ; predictions would be no more than guesses where a timeframe is concerned. It's as well to be prepared for any eventuality, as in 'expect the worst but hope for the best'. ...............hope yours turns out to be the best Rosebud.

Keep well hydrated and rest to aid recovery. x

Thanks Cat,

Today I've decided to take a few more steps forward in my recover:

1) I'm going to get dressed in to proper clothes, after having been in pjs for a week.

2) I'm going to trying cutting down from 2 condine and paracetamol 4 times a day to just 1 4 times a day.

3) Im going to try and walk as far as the local supermarket (about a 2 min walk, when I'm all good).

Later on I really must get some presents wrapped and wright some Xmas cards. Xx

Good girl ! All these positive moves are exactly what's needed to produce 'good' hormones which will boost your frame of mind. It's a beautiful day here in the NW so hope it's the same where you are....

Be sure to stop though, or at least take a break, if/when you feel fatigue ! Well done m'dear…… 😉 xx

Also does anyone know the rules on driving after concussion. Just wondering when I might be able drive again. Xx

Take Cat's advice on the paperwork. Rest and keep a note of anything else that you feel is different.

Best wishes

My background is a complementary therapist so here are my thoughts.

There is research to suggest that if you sit in water, brain functionality increases. Due to your recent injury, you have a small window of opportunity to use the natural healing process of the body to focus on the area you need it to.

You could try Epsom Salt baths every day or twice per day until you use up the tub. I use Hexeal 10kg from hexchemonline dot org uk - for less than £10, the impact on the rest of your life might be huge. 1 -2 mugs per bath and stay in for minimum 20mins - ideal 30 mins. If nothing else it will relax you, but research suggests, due to being in water, the human body brings blood to the head or above water area. This is what you need right now. Magnesium is contained in the salts and will be absorbed through your skin helped your detox and immune systems.

Add in some brisk short 15 minute walks, maybe 3 or 4 per day to drive your detox system, alongside some healthy food, raw is good (salads etc), but may slow your detox system down as it is cold food and kidneys like hot food so would recommend hot meals with some raw on top for breakfast lunch and dinner. Fish for breakfast lunch and tea but may get boring and expensive. Fish is great for the brain.

Alternative - Porridge with fresh or frozen fruit on top for breakfast, fish(omegas help brain healing) with hot veg and salad for lunch and turkey (Dr Mark Hyman used Turkey and broccoli as key foods in his detox healing of his BI - drhyman.com/blog/2016/06/10... ) with hot veg and salad for dinner.

Best advice I can give is do not eat chocolate over Christmas! It will clog your detox system and prevent the brain from healing. Just eat clean foods. Plan to have a Christmas chocolate feast in May or June if you are that bothered.

The brain's lymphatic system has only been discovered by the medical profession in the last 10 years. Lymph carries the rubbish out the body ie scar tissue. It works very slowly. It works well when the rest of the body works well. It works well when we support it with good food and regular short sharp exercise to invigorate digestion.

You mentioned virus. You need to support your immunity with nutrition. I use a range of supplements. See my previous posts for details on how I overcame my virus. You have to consider that if, because of the virus, it made you slower in your reaction time or more tired, the accident happened in the first place. You need to limit your exposure to future accidents. Easier said than done with concussion or a BI.

Best wishes and have a very clean Christmas period and New Year.

P.S. I would not have alcohol either, if you do need to, stick to low amounts and clean spirits like vodka and gin with lemon (lemon/lime are facilitators of detoxification) or Guinness that will do less damage to your detox systems than other drinks.

Well I've had a good day today. Managed to get dress. I have also got through the day with just 1 paracetamol and 1 codeine 4 times today. Managed to walk to the local shop, took a while but did it. Have also got some presents wrapped, but still have loads to do as can't sit on the floor for long to wrap them. Xx

That's great but don't push it! I abandoned to do lists in favour of an Achievement List. If it hadvone or two things on, such as, emptied dishwasher, made lunch, I was happy. I was also advised to be active for no longer than 20 minutes, then rest for at least 40.

Taks it easy. Get pampered this Christmas.

Thanks all. I have managed to do everything I planned in the last few days. Just feeling like people, especially my partner, are starting to think I should be better, as he said last night there was no bleed or cfs leek found so it couldn't been that bad an injury. Also I have a sick note from the hospital until next Monday but need to see my gp before I can get back to work (as a career who visits people in their own homes, so very physical) my partner seems to think I'll be fine to go back and I'm worried the gp will feel the same.

Sorry for the moan, but thanks for reading. Xx
