Apollo 11 Fifty Year Anniversary...

As the Apollo 11 astronauts returned to earth and landed in the sea I had a bleed in my brain.

My parents didn’t have a telephone so my dad had to ring our doctor from a telephone box then had to wait for the doctor to arrive and whilst laying on the settee feeling sick still have the image of Apollo 11 bobbing up and down in the water..

My GP told my parents that he wasn’t sure what was going on so he had to ring for an ambulance to take me to casualty.

Don’t know where he rang from as I mentioned we didn’t have a telephone.

I remember the ambulance men taking me down the 4 flights of stairs from our Maisonette to the waiting ambulance.

I was put on the men’s medical ward as the doctors didn’t know what was wrong with me either until over a week later following lumbar puncture I was taken to the neuro ward and had the operation to remove a blood clot and had my aneurysm clipped...

Two weeks later I returned home but it was early October 1969 before I was allowed to go back to school....

I was only 12 years old and will celebrate my 63rd birthday early next year.

What an amazing story. Thank you so much for sharing that. It is particularly notable for simply describing the juxtaposed events, one so particular and human and the other involving "mankind" broadly and also human. I enjoyed your clear and non-judgmental account of the disparity in the levels of technology and expertise available to respond to your sudden illness and the scientific and technological tsunami that led to that lunar mission.

You don't mention if you were left with permanent challenges after that bleed. We are about the same age. I hope the event 50 years ago was followed by many wonderful years and I wish you many more.
