Plateau duration for improvement

Hi all,

As everyone knows here my mom had a burrito hole drainage for her subacute subdural Haemotoma in February. She is recovering good. Sometimes we think that she's progressing but most of the days there's no improvement. It's like constant. I am afraid how and when she will come out of this. I have read that for non trauma brain insults plateau hits at 6 months and recovery stops after it. How true is it? Around what time does the recovery stop? I know everyone's brain is wired differently and no one can tell any exact details. But anyone has gone through the same or seen anything? What was the maximum time duration someone has seen that the plateau hits? It's already four months for her.

Hi Sodes

I suppose you could call my brain injury a non trauma brainninsult. I had Encephalitis, that is brain swelling I now have an ABI. The swelling caused the death of some of my brain cells, it cut off oxygen, i also have issues with my siggt because my optic nerves were constricted.

But, i have recovered very well, i had to be taught to walk again and it took 5 years before i would say the improvements really became less noticeable.

The improvements were always slow because my brain had to rewire and that doesnt happen quickly. A childs brain takes years and years to develop, so even an adults will take a long time. We recover more quickly if the original wiring can connect.

Dont be too impatient I still see improvements now albeit very small and i am 7 years post illness. The biggest ones happened within 2 years, that was the timescale i was told, but dont forget that to continue seeing improvements then your Mum must practice, practice, practice and try and try again.

Progress can seem patchy because we can't observe it and don't fully understand the process of brain healing, but at 4 months it's too early to draw conclusions.

My progress after a bleed on the brain was pretty inconsistent and I feel it plateaued at around the 2 year point. But I saw further improvements beyond that point, possibly as a result of management rather than further healing.

Hang in there Sodes ; it really is early days for your mum. …..sending best wishes to you both, Cat x

Hi Sodes

I was out after my SAH for approx 1 year OT's said I'd be better off in home but hubs said no!! phew. He bought me home and I progressed more so than just laying in a hospital bed with hydrocephalus and nothing being done about it. I am told this as I remember nothing. I then had a shunt fitted which meant another op and hubs was scared for me. Anyway had my shunt fitted which drains water from brain into tum. At first I awoke but was bed bound as body had done nothing..Went swimming got a Zimmer frame walked to toilet and got my dignity back all slow but sure takes a long while but long walks are no good but 600 yards is okay then back goes .Keep talking to Mum and singing her fav songs. Do things and talk to her she may fall asleep but our brains been through a lot.

"A letter from your Brain" it says Hi this is your brain talking to you and it tells you what a brain has gone through ...so keep in there talking singing and touching hands with her xxxx Good luck Sodes and Mum xxxxx My Daughter bought up pics of Dogs, but stay at it and never give up remember the Human spirit xxxxx And All what Cat & Kirk has put xxx

I had a stroke in 2011, my recovery seemed to be progressing well, I thought give it a month, I'll be back at work. How wrong I was, my recovery arrested at three months. No rhyme or reason, just did. It was a difficult time, because things I had recovered seemed to drift away. Well each yearly mot at the GPS, there are more deficits, but if you ask me what, I couldn't explain.

But that is my story, everyone has a different path of recovery, don't take my story as a given in respect to your mom, as I said, everyone is different.

I wish your mom well.
