No assistance dogs for brain injury survivors?

I have a moderate brain injury after a head on collision with a speeding lorry in 2009.

I was thinking of getting a dog as a pet but was informed where I live that I could only get an assistance dog but don’t think they give them to brain injured people ?!

Any one else had this issue please

I've never heard of getting a dog to assist when you have a brain injury ?

Do you live in property that has a communal area ? or in an apartment or flat ?

If so then I would assume it would be to do with the tenants or housing association, if you were getting a dog you would need to consider the needs of the animal and the other residents.

Is there somewhere to walk the dog ? are you fit enough to do this ? What about toilet facilities for the animal ?

Dogs are super company and can help a great deal when you need a friend but you got to think can I look after the animal ?

What about another sort of pet that could keep you company ? something that you don't have to consider going outside with, only a thought :-)

Thanks for the reply Danny, I checked with my housing association and the assistance dog was the only way I could get a dog where I live.

I am out in the country most days Metal detecting since my accident so yes the dog would have an amazing life style.

I have now found somewhere and I have started the process.

Thanks

Hi HavingAlook1,

Assistance dogs should be available to people with brain injury who have been assessed as being able to benefit from them. I know some people with brain injury have them, although it may be quite difficult as demand for the dogs is quite high.

Can I suggest you contact our helpline on 0808 800 2244 or helpline@headway.org.uk to talk this through - they may be able to point you in the direction of charities/services that can help.

Best wishes,

Andrew
