Initial PIP assessment

Hi All

My husband has his initial PIP assessment on Tuesday and wondered if anyone had any advice on how to handle it? I will be there with him so hoping I can help get things across appropriately. We are nearly 5 years post BI but weren’t aware we could apply for this!

Usually the assessment begins with the health professional asking what type of things you do. The difficulty for a TBI is that presumptions can be made if you can do A you can do B.

When considering the questions the person should be able to perform it safely and reliably, so ensure you make clear all difficulties. You should look at the PIP activities and consider where the difficulties would occur the activities can be found on the CAB website here:

The guide for the health professional on how the assessment should be applied here:

I'm afraid there's lots of info as there are many issues here, the main thing is think about the activity in the context of a normal day, so answer it that way not as if you've been resting throughout the day to help you perform at your best.

Keep your answers simple and don't be persuaded to be more positive than the truth.

Sorry but you asked a big question when it probably appeared simple.

You might try your local authority Welfare Rights office. A Welfare Rights officer can be an expert, sympathetic advisor and a valuable spokesperson in accompanying clients to tribunals. It depends on your area ; they're brilliant here in Trafford but it varies from one authority to another.

Google Welfare Rights in your area............

I'll pass your glowing report on to the Service manager, in fact you may wish put it in writing, as such endorsements can help with funding applications.

It's never bothered me but some clients who've had a free service and I've helped them get thousands of pounds, avoid repossession and prison and they don't even say thank you, however I don't do it for praise.

I’m not sure how to take this comment. I’m really grateful for you taking the time to write such a detailed reply and the links you attached were very useful. I replied earlier in a rush apologies if you were looking for a bigger reply

My miss I forgot to say if an activity takes twice as long or more you should be assessed as unable to perform the descriptor.

Morning. A piece of advice I was given before mine was to think of your worst day when answering questions about what you can do. I found it difficult to be so negative about my capabilities as I'm constantly striving to get back to 'normal' Good luck.
