Has anyone undergone an assessment or knows who to approach for support regarding an assessment to see if someone is able to hold down 'meaningful' employment. My sons insurance company are needing clarification. He was injured & has a traumatic brain injury 5yrs ago.

Not sure what you need here, I've been through two of the DWP medical assessments and been judged capable for limited work on both occasions but not had to apply for jobs, because that classification is so broad it's ridiculous.

The tests I had to do a 5 year old or a fit 80 year old could do but you wouldn't expect either to work would you?

I've not had any involvement with insurance companies other than a fight over whether my illness fitted their critical illness description, but I will help if I can xxxx

Hi Annef68,

Thank you for your question.

Without more information it's difficult to know exactly what type of assessment is needed, but it sounds like this is part of a compensation claim, as the insurance company is involved?

If so I'd probably suggest speaking to a solicitor for some legal advice regarding this. We maintain a directory of brain injury specialist firms that offer a free initial consultation, so you could perhaps ask their advice? The advantage here is that the firms will have experience of occupational assessments and will be able to make sure any reports provided are designed for insurance companies, rather than being more general assessments. You can search our directory at headway.org.uk/legal-advice...

If this is not an option, an occupational therapist or neuropsychologist with experience of brain injury and employment may be able to help. If you contact our helpline (0808 800 2244 or helpline@headway.org.uk) we can talk things through with you in a bit more detail.

Best wishes,

Is there a disability specialist organisation in your area? Ours have advocates that will help with this sort of thing, find out exactly what it is all about and attend with the person if desired. Good luck
