Did anyone find they could not be trusted after their TBI

Hi

Minds wandering back to the immediate events following my TBI, and wondered if any one else found that they were no longer trusted with the activities they performed prior to their TBI.

There are a number of things I can't be trusted on. Just on evidence alone yesterday I left the front door wide open again, left the cooker on, sliced the tip of my finder from the tip to next joint with a knife.

I used to work on computer systems that's gone and used to do my home electrics and building - I won't be doing that again.

Even writing correspondence I need my wife to check it because I miss the point or fail to complete the sentences. Much the same in social occasions someone can be talking away and I can start talking about something completely different.

So all in all not sure what I can be trusted with at the moment

Oh and crossing the road safely - not good

My wife/family trust me, I've recovered well, work are a occasionally a little unsure as to my abilities but are relaxing though if I'm tired and thus a bit wobbly on my feet I do get watched a touch.

I work for a care company/charity so they are used to health problems etc.

Mind you equally though I'm a lot better I can and do run out of go, and have wobbled and even fallen on a bad day, so clearly I'm not what I was yet.

I DON'T TRUST MYSELF.HENCE I DO THE DOUBLE, TRIPLE, QUADRUPLE CHECKING THING. I RE-READ. RE-EAD & RE-READ ANY CORRESPONDENCE NO MATTER HOW TRIVIAL IN CASE I'VE SAID SOMETHING I DON'T MEAN OR IT'S COME OUT REALLY RUDE OR SOMETHING. PAIN IN THE BUM.

I GET THE OPEN FRONT DOOR, I'VE LEFT THE KEYS ON THE OUTSIDE A COUPLE OF TIMES WHEN I GO OUT, ONCE FOR HOURS WHEN I WENT TO A NEURO APPOINTMENT. I AM A DEMON FOR LEAVING TAPS RUNNING & THE FRIDGE OR FREEZER DOORS OPEN - MORE MULTIPLE CHECKING WHENEVER I LEAVE THE KITCHEN. LEAVING THE GAS HOB OR THE GAS FIRE ON ARE OTHER SPECIALITIES. AT LEAST I'VE GOT GOOD HOME ISURANCE!

This insurance thing could be an interesting point? I wonder should we have to declare it to them. I wonder if they would meet a claim if we knew we were a risk and frequently do things that may cause a claim

Dear sospan,

Thanks for your post and raising this question- it can be a tricky area.

We would suggest that anyone who has had a head injury carefully checks any insurance policies they may have to see what the requirements are for reporting a change in circumstances. Many policies will state that the insurance company need to be notified if there are changes in a person's health, particularly in the case of driving insurance or life insurance, for example.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Headway

Life is very frustrating. The only person that trusts you, is you.You know you need help to do things. Its a fine line between letting you learn and, taking over. It's rarely got right.

This afternoon the wife started cooking a joint of meat. With 30mins to go she had to pop out and left me with the "its nearly done keep an eye on it". You know what happens next. Within a few seconds of getting the "well done" meat out of the oven the smoke alarm went off.

Then the phone went off with a text from my wife -"You've forgotten haven't you"

Doh!

Ye same with me, I'm not trusted to do basic things like go out with my friends cos I say things without thinking. I am especially not trusted with my anger cos I skip to violence straight away
