craftyguru,

Welcome to our forum.

Long term elevated iron levels can have a detrimental effect on our immune system.

From what I read research seems to indicate that the immunological problems are more likely with HH (mutated HFE gene) which is the most common cause of Haemochromotosis.

Hi. I'm new on here and not strictly entitled to be here as I don't have hemachromatosis but some form of iron overload. My main condition is Lupus and, in answer to your question, I absolutely do think that iron affects the immune system in susceptible people. It causes my lupus to flare every time i take the tablets to bring my HB up. Iron infusions give me Type 3 hypersensitivities. I get classic signs of iron overload (malaise/crippling fatigue/arthritis in certain finger joints and muscle/.joint pain in others) despite having a low HB and low ferritin - apparently it is possible albeit unusual.
