My friend having breast cancer chemotherapy was offered a cold cap to protect her hair but I have ovarian cancer and didn't get that option.

Hair loss only occurs with some but not all anti-cancer drugs. The one that often causes hair loss with gynaecological cancer is called Taxol. It's also used to treat breast cancer but it is given in a different way. In breast cancer, it is often given over an hour. When used to treat ovarian cancer, the common UK practice is to give Taxol over 3 hours every 3 weeks. It is difficult to tolerate a cold cap for a long period of time. Some women say it gives them an excruciating migraine like headache.

It is probably tolerable for about an hour. That's why it's offered during breast cancer care but not ovary cancer care as the drug is given over a shorter period of time.

Hair loss can be a vital consideration for some women. There are alternative drugs that are as effective and have a different side effect profile. They may not be available in your NHS hospital but there is no harm in asking about omitting Taxol, having an alternative to Taxol, or having Taxol weekly over an hour with a cold cap.

If you have any questions about treatment options for gynaecological cancers, then please call our Nurse Specialist free on 08088020019 or email on nurse@eveappeal.org.uk to discuss further.
