Pharmacist changing Graves disease medication methimazole brand without notifying my doctor or myself and made me sick!

Hello fellow Graves suffers I am new here and have a big question about our medication the American Thyroid Association wrote And this is word for word that Thyroid disease is a lifelong therapy and is best managed with consistent and precise treatment with the same brand of thyroid hormone. Your doctor may change your dose of thyroid hormone, but the brand of our thyroid hormone medication should be consistant. And further states not to change thyroid medication brand without talking to your doctor so should this mean the pharmacist as well should not change the brand without contacting my doctor as well?

This happens all the time in the UK. Pharmacist are only obligated to dispense listed medication, they can chose what is used & usually it’s what ever is most cost effective.

Some people have sensitivities to the excipients or fillers added to the tablets and therefore it’s recommended to stick with brand that suits.

This usually applies to hypothyroidism and replacement hormones such as levothyroxine which is a life long treatment.

Hyper Graves isn’t expected to to continue life long. Graves can go in remission and if hyper levels remain after many months doctors look at more permanent treatments.

As you have been made Ill by a different brand, you have every case to have your preferred brand restored.

If you weren’t made aware of the change that’s inexcusable. Pharmacists are legally obliged to dispense manufactures patient information leaflet with every prescription. I can’t image it’s different in US as you would always need to know the ingredients of the medication given.
