Hi. I'm hoping someone can help. My husband was diagnosed with coeliac disease 9 months ago. Last week he caught a stomach bug.
You don't say how you know that it is a stomach 'bug', by which do you mean infection? As you say this was acquired last week, I assume this has been ongoing for more than 3 days. I recommend your husband goes to his GP for diagnosis and treatment. I would only worry about recurring CD symptoms when the infection has been confirmed to have been cleared up.
My daughter had a S&D bug that lasted 48 hrs and my husband showed the same symptoms shortly after. The symptoms have been ongoing for six days. We contacted nhs direct this morning but they don't have many answers. We just wondered if any other coeliac sufferers had experienced anything similar.
if its just a sickness bug then should just drink lots of water and dry food as you would regardless if u have coeliac disease or not, obviously if you eat something with gluten/wheat in then yes u will possibly get the same symptoms, if it carries on then maybe go to gp but if u say ur daughter had a bug then just do what u or i would do if u had a bug just water and dry food, being a coeliac shudnt affect it.
Each time I have a severe stomach bug now, I end up with another food that I can't tollerate. These now include tuna, egg white, nuts, raisins, oranges chocolate and all alcohol which added to the gluten has cut my choices down significantly. No cakes or meringues!!!
I'm no expert, but I'm thinking that if your husband's body is still healing from whenever he last ate gluten (which can take years), then he might experience worse symptoms from the same bug. This isn't particularly a worry; just horrible when it happens. But maybe it's worth going to the GP so s/he has a record of this, just on the off-chance it is anything else and a pattern emerges. Fennel tea is very soothing to the gut. Hope he's well soon.
I have found that when I get a tummy bug that I tend to take a few more days than others in my family to recover and then my tum is a bit iffy for a week or so. I put it down to it being more sensitive than others now
Thanks for your responses everyone. He's just about back on track after 2 weeks!
