Leaky gut ...

According to some, coeliacs and gluten intolerants sometimes have leaky guts. I have found two sites that explain this if you would like to check up to find what a leaky gut entails.

What is a leaky gut? A leaky gut is in fact when the walls of the intestine develop weaknesses which eventually lead to permanently open doorways in the intestine walls. The intestine is like a water course, which is full of different 'life forms.' Some are particles of fibre, others are fully digested items of fat or protein, etc, there are also partially digested particles of food, bad bacteria and other toxins. In a healthy person only the fully digested food particles (good things) gain access through the doorways but when a person has poorer health then sometimes the doorways may remain fully open and this allows all of the bad things through as well.

Here is a quote from the website - the link for the remainder of this particular article is below:

"Most people have heard of the term "leaky gut" but may not realize that this term refers to how larger molecules may get into the blood when structures called tight junctions that are there to seal the gaps between intestinal cells, have instead, opened up. This opening creates a passage that lacks the same type of regulation that happens when substances move through intestinal cells. Scientists like to call this movement of fluid and its solutes through this opening "para-cellular transport". Other tissues can be leaky like this, too, like the bladder, kidney cells and even the blood brain barrier."

Here's another article. To see the full account please see the link below:

"Yet when it comes to eating bread, or grains in general, there’s a little more to the story. How would you feel knowing that grains can not only lead to hyperinsulinism, but they can also make your gut leak. Yep, you too may have already acquired “Leaky Gut Syndrome”. Leaky gut comes in varying degrees from tolerant, to gluten sensitive, to full blown Celiac disease."

Thanks Lynxcat, those are great resources.

The information definitely reflects my own experience, in that my health didn't get back to 'normal' by just cutting out gluten. It was healing my gut that made the BIG leap in health terms.

Andrea can I ask what you did to achieve this? Ive been gluten free for 14 months but i definitely don't feel symptom free.

I have found the following interview with Dr Peter Osborne so I am adding it here for those who wish to pursue more information about developing a Leaky Gut and I personally found very interesting. The recorded video interview states that it is new information and was recorded in 2012. The video lasts 5 minutes 56 seconds ..

Hi Lynxcat, all very interesting as usual, now if a coeliac has leaky gut then surely gluten is crossing the blood brain barrier? Which would explain many things.

These are exactly my thoughts too! I think much more research needs to be done not just with Coeliac Disease but with humans eating gluten and grains. From some of the things that I have been reading it isn't just gluten intolerants and coeliacs that are getting this problem. Don't forget that most of the general populous never have any kind of invasion of their intestines and would never have biopsies to see what if any damage may be present. They may have lively villi but they could in all probability have minor leaks - indeed we could all be dripping taps! Lol!

This isn't related to Leaky Gut but I found it very interesting regarding fluoride. There is information regarding thyroid, etc. Watching this video made me wonder if it may have been the cause of my own first initial problems with my thyroid and could it be that this is one very small part of the puzzle that leads on to developing an autoimmune disorder and even leaky gut?

Published on YouTube on 28 December 2012:

The following is an excerpt from a paper written by Dr Barry Durrant-Peatfield MBBS LRCP MRCS - to read the whole account please see the link below - this may be of special interest to those who have developed thyroid problems.

" ... It has been known since the latter part of the 19th century that certain communities, notably in Argentina, India and Turkey were chronically ill, with premature ageing, arthritis, mental retardation, and infertility; and high levels of natural fluorides in the water were responsible. Not only was it clear that the fluoride was having a general effect on the health of the community, but in the early 1920s Goldemberg, working in Argentina showed that fluoride was displacing iodine; thus compounding the damage and rendering the community also hypothyroid from iodine deficiency.

Highly damaging to the thyroid gland

This was the basis of the research in the 1930s of May, Litzka, Gorlitzer von Mundy, who used fluoride preparations to treat over-active thyroid illness. Their patients either drank fluoridated water, swallowed fluoride pills or were bathed in fluoridated bath water; and their thyroid function was as a result, greatly depressed. The use in 1937 of fluorotyrosine for this purpose showed how effective this treatment was; but the effectiveness was difficult to predict and many patients suffered total thyroid loss. So it was given a new role and received a new name, Pardinon. It was marketed not for over-active thyroid disease but as a pesticide. (Note the manufacturer of fluorotyrosine was IG Farben who also made sarin, a gas used in World War II). ... "

hi lynxcat, i saw from one of your other posts that you are uk based? have you found your nhs doctors completely unhelpful when it comes to proposing theory of leaky gut? as a coeliac i was just old go gluten-free but i don't feel this is entirely solving the problem.

did you go paleo? this wouldn't work for me as I'm vegetarian. Just wondering what uk resources you might know of to help.
