Has anyone had adverse reaction to Tesco Porridge Oats. I tried some on Thursday and as it usually takes about 2 days for anything to get through my digestive system, this morning I am suffering big time, the abdominal cramps are a bitch.

There have been issues with supermarket Free From Oats in the past. Are you eating the mainstream oats or the free from? Here's a link to previous discussions on this topic. You will see that many Coeliacs cannot tolerate oats.

Hi Dinger, Personally - I would say that there are too many saying that 'if you are coeliac do not eat oats' for me to now consider doing so. I did when I was first diagnosed because I didn't know better but since taking them out of my diet I feel so much better that I would never reconsider re-introducing them. Oats are a rotation crop and so are usually sown in crop rotation with wheat and barley and this gives a chance of cross-contamination. Even in the most pure of oats people have had gluten type symptoms because oats are really very closely related to wheat. It is your choice but I suggest that you perhaps read a few of the sites that oppose eating them. Just as an added piece of information - some suggest that people who have coeliac disease and eat oats should have yearly biopsies to see if any damage is occurring whilst they eat this particular grain. Here are just a few - there are many more on the Net:

It was the tesco 'gluten free' oats that made me ill! It only takes a few hours for me to notice I've had a reaction! I now avoid all oats! To worried to try any, especially after reading others reactions!
