I was wondering if anyone can tell me... - Gluten Free Guerr...
I was wondering if anyone can tell me what's in bean shoot's that coeliac's are'nt allowed them
Sometimes they are grow on a media that has flour in it. The ones in Sainsbury are not ok but the ones in Tesco are (but I always check the label first!)
so thats why i was ill then i thought it was something else i had had i never looked had mine from asda and it didnt say grrr
I was amazed when I noticed the warning on Sainsbury's bean sprouts and I asked why. They told me that the lines that handle bean sprouts ( packagaing I suppose) also handle gluten containing ingredients ( pasta salads or salad with croutons perhaps). I've grown my own bean sprouts and all it needs is mung beans and fresh pure water. No flour. Sainsbury's just can't be bothered to take care to avoid cross-contamination. It seems that Tesco can, unless they've missed something on their bean sprout labels. Sorry Sainsbury's. Just aother black mark against you!
yes me too x

Sainsbury's recipe for 'Prawn Pad Thai'. Sainsbury claims it to be gluten free but it contains bean sprouts. Are they useless or what!
I've just complained on their website about this recipe Phil! I think we all should!
I know Sainsburys fresh stir fry is gluten free although it states it may not be as it is processed in a possible cross contamination situation, I contacted Coeliac uk and they say it has been tested and is fine, but Tescos do not mention gluten or wheat in their stir fry and it is NOT gluten free (again Coeliac uk advice)--Until the manufacturers sort out their labelling we are still eating in a mine field of misinformation
Thanks for posting this - it would never even have occurred to me to look at the label on beansprouts! Luckily I haven't been eating them very frequently. Are there any other vegetables that are likely to have similar risks?
I am one of the laziest, most disorganised cooks going, but honestly it's very easy to sprout your own. I've got a sprouter (about £15 I think), but a friend does them in a jam jar and just changes the water twice a day. And as a bonus, my 2-year-old thinks they're a real treat :o).
Surely if we wash the beansprouts then we'll be fine? I eat them loads and have always been ok but I've always washed all fruit and veg, even bags of ready washed salad so maybe that's why.
