Bit confused about GF diet
It will make you life easier if you can eat foods labelled gluten free. However, if you find you get reactions to them bear in mind that they can contain levels of gluten which cause problems for the more sensitive coeliiacs/gluten intolerants. Also, oats are ok for about 90% of coeliacs but 10% react to the oat protein even if there is no cross contamination with wheat/rye/barley.
Thanks Lois
I've been eating them for 2 yrs... Probably why I've still been having trouble.
The doctor never suggested to leave them out
Hi Ian67,
A GF diet means that it is important to NOT EAT FOODS that contain gluten - Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and many consider oats which has a similar protein affecting most people with coeliac disease. If you have been diagnosed as a coeliac or have been advised you are allergic to gluten, then it is vital to avoid any foods which contain these above grains. In other words you require a 'GLUTEN FREE' diet.
It is a slow learning process as some sugars/syrups also are made from grains containing gluten so when you go shopping it is advisable to keep a list of foods to avoid in your pocket - just a s a safety measure.
There is an extensive list of 'SAFE' and 'GLUTEN FREE' products which I have used to help me sort out foods that are safe to buy. It is a fairly comprehensive US site that lists food items in alphabetical order and so it is easy to find basic grocery items and quickly check if they are safe to eat on a GF diet.
wheat is in all sorts of things...from gravy mix to chocolate bars..i have a book from the coeliac society that gives you list of what food you can have..
it lists foods from all the supermarket chains...
