Hashis diagnosis, feeling very sick after going GF

Hello, very pleased to have found this group.

I was diagnosed with Hashis hypothyroidism 7 years ago. Recently my meds had to be increased so decided to go GF to try to stop any further decline.

I’ve been GF for almost two weeks now and have started feeling so nauseous - it’s pretty debilitating. Also have fatigue, interrupted sleep, feeling down...

Did others experience ‘withdrawal’ type symptoms? How long did they last and did anything help?

Thanks much for any advice, I’m trying so hard to keep at this but it’s rough!

I, too, was diagnosed with Hashis 7 years ago, as well as gluten intolerant, which has since been diagnosed as Celiac. When I stopped eating gluten I went through withdrawal and detox and the symptoms were very much like having the Flu; headache, nausea, diarrhea, body aches and extreme exhaustion. That went on for 2 or 3 weeks and then finally went away. But, the craving for wheat took much longer and that went on for at least a year. I had to substitute rice crackers and breads from other grains. As time went gone on, I was also diagnosed with Dermatitis Herpetiformis (DH - a Celiac skin disorder) and have gone off all grains. After a lifetime of poisoning ourselves, it takes time for the body and mind to adjust. Give yourself time. You can also help yourself along with detox baths. To tell you the truth, what I went through going off wheat was far worse then when I stopped drinking, decades ago. Interesting, that.

There are some studies suggesting that wheat/ gluten are opioids, which means that they are likely to be addictive.

Hang on in there, it will get better.

Make sure you are well hydrated and include some salt in your diet if you don’t already. A probiotic supplement may help in the long term, as it can help with the healing going on inside. Some people recommend taking a magnesium supplement, but you need to be careful not to take too much. Ginger tea can help with the nausea.

Keep your diet simple and avoid the ready-made gf foods, as the additives they contain will not help.
