Been invited to have a NHS Health Check. What experience do GFG members have of this opportunity for an MOT? What questions should you make sure to ask?

NHS Health Checks
Hi Eggardon, I had one and it was reassuring, mine was carried out by one of the nurses in my Dr's practice and it was very relaxed but informative. I found it interesting knowing what my cholesterol level was. And they check your height and weight for BMI and check your blood pressure.
So even though it's only basic, it's worthwhile in my book, as it can make us aware that we need to take action. And what do you ask? that depends on your results as they can give advice on lowering blood pressure etc.
And I hope you pass your MOT...
I was invited for one of these health MOT's last year. It was conducted by the clinics nurse and was mostly useful. I was able to find out my blood sugar reading, although they hadn't ask me to fast beforehand, which had been worrying me since a few members of my family have diabetes. Thankfully it was fine. I also found out my cholesterol level although I was slightly alarmed by the nurse who took my blood sample glibly stating that she thought they should put statins in the water supply! Good grief, talk about over medication! Most of the people I know who have been on this medication have found it gave them many bad side effects. They came off it as soon as they could. Seems to be a case of big pharma doing its usual drug pushing. This aspect of the NHS really worries me. Drugs are considered first before lifestyle or diet changes. My height and weight were also assessed and because I was overweight the nurse insisted on giving me a low fat high carb diet sheet which took no account of gluten intolerance or the fact that I had told her I was finding a low carb diet suited me well at the moment and that I was losing weight on it. I will go back for another series of tests since I've been doing much more exercise this past year and feel fitter. So I'd like to see if it's reflected in my blood sample. Overall though I'd say my experience was pretty mixed.
A GP performed mine. Blood pressure, heart, pulse etc. Height, weight; BMI and cholesterol, which, incidentally was high - (coeliacs often are), because I'm lean and coeliac he said he wasn't worried.
I'm not sure why they did this because it's impossible to get an appointment when you need one!
I had my MOT a few years ago. The GP told me the reason was to pick up anyone with potential heart problems or at danger of a heart attack, so he asked about family health history. Also tested liver and thyroid function, along with the usual stuff, so several pages of results. Thankfully, all good results.
It seems to have been a bit more detailed than a basic test, not sure how usual this may be. It was a positive experience for me, I hope it will be for you, too.
