Should Celiac's give up Soya ?

Hi there Maryelle, if soya makes you ill then you should avoid it but it is naturally gluten free and is very high in protein so if you are a vegetarian coeliac or a lactose intolerant one then unless it makes you ill then I would have thought it was a healthy alternative to milk products.

Alpro products are made with non GM soya which is worth bearing in mind. And I've never had an issue with soya.

If you are going for Alpro products make sure you check that you aren't eating the ones full of sugar, or even worse, fructose.

Societies that have always eaten soya have tended to eat a small amount of fermented soya products, and not used it as a milk substitute.

I think penel's response is fairly restrained. I think unfermented soy is not a health food.

Soy is a goitrogen that affects thyroid function (there have been a few studies showing this), and contains phytoestrogens of disputed benefit (it's mildly estrogenic, so it blocks natural estrogens, which may or may not be a good thing for any particular person!).

Soy can also be a cause of villous atrophy:

I prefer coconut milk, almond and rice milk.
