Does anyone else who is gluten-free find that if they accidentally eat gluten-containing food, they then feel absolutely shattered?

I accidentally licked my fingers the other day after picking up porridge my grandaughter had spilt on the table (it was lovely I must admit) but immediately regretted it because I knew that within a few hours I would be up to the loo endless times and then all I can do is flake out on the sofa. Next day after lunch I am still having to go to the toilet about 10 times and then tired out again that evening, not too bad the next day but now have mouth ulcers........ I wont do that again !

Both my children are coeliac and as a result my husband and I are also GF, even though we both tested negative for coeliac. We have just had a few days away without the kids and ate gluten. We were both exhausted for 3 days on our return. Neither of us had the severe reaction our children get, and my oldest gets 'brain fog' when he's glutened and our reaction wasn't as severe as that, just a general tiredness. No more gluten for us.

Thank you for both replies- I couldn't believe how tired I felt both yesterday and today. I used to feel tired before going gluten free, but I have only been doing this about 5 weeks after diagnosis, and thought it was remarkable.

On Thursday I had Mrs Prindle one pack choc mackroon for afternoon tea, almost 2 hrs later was feeling squeemish then had to ask manageress to take over on till as it was as if I had been glutened. Purchased it from H&B free from section. Forgot they put other foods not just gluten free foods in that section. Only just made it to rest room so none went on till or carpet.

maybe we should protest to H and B, I know we have to read stuff but as a health shop they need to wise up. Mrs crimble makes both GF and non GF, can be confusing.

i just checked Mrs Crimble macaroon ingredients and they state that the product is gluten free.

The listed ingredients are : Sugar, coconut (27%), glucose syrup, egg white, dextrose, potato starch, vegetable oil, fat reduced cocoa powder (2%), stabiliser: sorbitan tristearate, emulsifier: soya lecithin.

Hopefully that means the glucose syrup & dextrose listed are not wheat derived. Perhaps someone here has already asked Stiletto Foods and can tell you that.

They do both, gluten free and ones with gluten.

Hello, I did that and was put in my place sharply and told it a free from section not just for coeliacs, that is how I found out free from applies to other foods. Maybe coeliacs should be pre warned about free from food, we are told to always look but not about free from doesnt always mean gluten free.

I find that if I eat Gluten Free foods that contain Dextrose or any alternative derivative I get my problems the next day with a few visits to the loo. If I reacted as quickly as some imply I would be asking my GP/Consultant why! CD is not a type of illness that brings reactions so quickly.

My reaction is an allergy by inhaling formaldehyde from many sources and the newer the source the more intense the reaction, anaphylaxis. But eating formaldehyde producing foods brings other problems now being investigated. Yes similar to CD.

If you react the same day to eating gluten ask yourself why and check to see if you do have problems with ingredients, check out reaction types I did.

I ate soup at the hospice when visiting hubby there, two hours later sweating, exhausted, vomitting, taken home by nice nurse, shivering and sweating and shaking all night, doc says I react as if I have toxic shock syndrome.... now I question everything.

The soup was made by vomunteers and they had thickened it with non gf flour.

Fatigue..... yep - that is definitely one of my symptoms. It feels like I've had the life sucked out of me. Add that to brain fog, stomach ache and a lasting attachment to the bathroom; and I have the recipe for a really rotten time!

I tested negative for coeliac but went gluten-free anyway as it stopped me being dopey, breathless and exhausted on a daily basis, which I put down to my previous diagnosis of pernicious anaemia. In the last year or so before going gluten free I would have naps most days if I could get away with it.

I don't get many gastric issues and my most noticeable reaction if I'm glutened is sleepiness - I'll feel my eyelids suddenly drooping and have to go and lie down and sleep for three or four hours. Last time I had this (a few days ago) it came on about 20hrs (day 2) after eating the thing I reacted to (poppadoms with no gluten-containing ingredients but obviously not quite as gluten free as I thought). But I did get a reaction (tingling/trembling feeling) pretty soon after eating the food.

I also get a massive craving for sugar/carbohydrate around the time I get sleepy. Does anyone else get that?

I was gluttened two weeks ago and last night is the first night sleep since.. Since being gluttened I have have had severe stomach cramps. Sugar cravings nausea to name but a few. I have been at work but iis been really difficult to stay awake during my commute. Added to this I have gained weight due to the crazy cravings. Hopefully today is the first day of a good period now

This may well be unique to me and my daughter, but if we get glutened, we find that we are able to reduce the immediate stomach pain/cramps by eating a bar of milk chocolate. I guess the layer of fat must help protect the stomach from contact with gastric acid which would cause further inflammation. It doesn't stop the longer term symptoms, just relieves the immediate pain. Apart from these circumstances I don't eat chocolate or sweets and stick to a low carb diet to help manage my energy levels.
