Cataract on other eye after 3 trabeculotomys

I've had 3 trabeculotomys in quick succession.I the had a 5 FU jab as the operation never worked as well as having a cataract.

I am left with 25% vision.

The good eye has a cataract forming and my specialist keeps saying I will need it doing.

I've been referred to the consultant to discuss having a cataract done on the good eye.

Ian obviously scared stiff if it goes wrong I may loose sight in that eye.

Any advice especially about finding good specialist to operate on it

Hello, Peter59,

I can totally understand your concerns about having more surgery after having gone through three Trabeculectomies.

Trabeculectomies tend to speed up the cataract process. The reason why your consultant has recommended having the cataract removed now is because the earlier they are removed the less complications occur.

Because of the issues around your previous surgery, the person your consultant has referred you too will probably have experience with dealing with patients with previous problems.

I have advanced glaucoma in both eyes and have had many surgeries in both eyes, including cataract surgery. I had my cataract surgery done by my glaucoma consultant asit was not straight forward and he did a procedure at the same time called canaloplasty which opens up the main drainage channel in the eye. This worked really well for me. I would say that your glaucoma consultant is best placed to refer you to a suitable person to do your cataract if they are not going to do it themself. Generally speaking, cataract surgery is very safe but I completely understand your concerns in the circumstances. I wish you all the best.

Thanks, my 3 failed Trabs done locally .I was then given 5 FU jab .

All left me with 25% vision in one eye.

Now talking about doing other eye .

A consultant who has started to do cataract last couple years.

All have been good but the end result not good.

Thought about asked to be referred to spa health care who are doing on behalf of NHS .

I know people been very happy but they did not have underlying condition.

I don't know where you live Peter or if you would consider travelling but Moorfields as the principal UK centre of excellence is well worth considering . Their private hospital wing encourages online patient evaluations of their consultants via :

I live 340 miles away.14 years ago I came down and Consultant put me on Cosopt preservative free dropsas my eyes were bloody red.

Drops my local hospital was unaware and I've been on them since.

Manchester Eye Hospital had been asked to look at putting a shunt in but convinced them to put me back on original drops and pressure held.

I could go to either 680miles round trip to London or 200to Manchester.

It's my last chance as failure would see me going blind.

It's knowing who is a good surgeon for this operation any ideas how I find out?

I live in the North West but my consultant locally did not feel confident in revising his original failed trab so I decided to go to Moorfields . I am not out of the woods yet and the constant travel and hotels are wearing but I feel I am in the best possible hands . You might like to google Doctify and then type Specialists , Cataracts and Moorfields in the 3 boxes that should appear . I was a bit suspicious of Doctify until I discovered both that Moorfields Hospital itself was actually asking me to put feedback there and also that my own experiences were consistant with the reviews I had read . You should be able to narrow down to a few consultants and then make a final choice . Good luck !

I really feel for you living so far from a hospital with the facilities you meed. I live in the West Midlands and am lucky have access to excellent care from a surgeon with an international reputation who trained at Moorfields. I see him privately but he does NHS work at the Birmingham and Midland Eye Hospital. If you search for Mr Imran Masood you will find his details.
