Sailing after Trabeculectomy

Hello,

I'm thinking of taking up dinghy sailing again after my Trabeculectomy and wondered if anyone else had experience of sailing post op.

My consultant recommends that I wear goggles if I am swimming and I seem to remember capsizing my dinghy quite a lot when I used to sail!

thanks for your help

Hi, I have had trabulectomies in both eyes, I don’t sail, but do swim and gig row. I wear prescription goggles for swimming. I wear my glasses for gig rowing as we do get splashed - but not totally immersed! The risk is from you getting an infection, if I was you and you know you are likely to get dunked I would wear goggles, especially given the levels of pollution there might be in the water. 😊

Thanks - that's very helpful to know. Yes I think the infection risk is the problem. The other issue is the effort needed to get the boat upright again after a capsize so I'll perhaps do some more thinking!

The goggles I use for swimming are the Sutton Swimwear reef mask- they cover more than just your eyes so are less likely to raise the pressure.

Hi,

Swimming goggles can increase eye pressure. I was recommended to get Cressi Planet goggles, which fit on the face rather than just over the eyes. They are extremely comfortable to wear.

Thank you - that's a very helpful suggestion. I was thinking about wearing goggles but was worried about the raised pressure

I have just had lens replacement and was a keen swimmer before.

Since the surgery I am using aqua sphere vista. They take a while to get used to but they are like a small mask.

Thank you that's very helpful - lots of goggles to choose from now!
