DVLA eye test result

Two days ago I posted about waiting for my result of my eye test and was anxious it would drag on.

On the 13th December I went to see my consultant, I made it obvious I was not happy with the lack of support during and after covid and that I knew my eyesight had deteriorated because of it. Two weeks previous I had laser treatment that had not worked, the person that did the laser told me before he didn’t think it would work, he checked my pressures 40 minutes after and confirmed he didn’t think it would be effective. He wrote to my consultant and said I needed an appointment in two weeks as he was concerned about my loss of vision. Which was the appointment on the 13th

The consultant said to try Cosopt and Monopost and he would see me again in 6 weeks. He then dropped the Bombshell, I couldn’t drive until I had passed the DVLA test. Since then my wife who commutes 12 miles a day has been driving 100 miles a day to take me and pick me up from work. After a couple of phone calls to the DVLA I was just told I am in the system and they will contact me.

Yesterday at 3pm I emailed the DVLA explaining my situation. At 4pm I was emailed a reply confirming my email and someone would contact me. At 5pm I had a phone call saying they had reviewed my test results and I could drive on a one year medical licence. Ok it’s one year, I am 68 in April so would have had to apply for my licence at 70 anyway. Hopefully now with the help of my consultant and some lifestyle changes by me I can protect what eyesight I have

Hello Ibstockblue,

Very good to know despite all the difficulties you have had your licence returned at last.

Best wishes

The DVLA kept me waiting for nearly a year to make a decision - they then issued a license for 2 years with a large threat of another eye test. I have a rare condition that they couldn’t rule on and never contacted my consultant or hospital. They did send my GP a form to complete .

You can drive for up to a year while they make their decision - good luck.
