Hello & this trabecule type thing!

Great to have found this website. Diagnosed 2 years ago. I think it’s now quite advanced and/or certainly deteriorating. Having had poor care from my local nhs trust I am now with an nhs eye hospital, which seems much better. Next stop is the Trabeculectomy (which I can’t even pronounce or spell, never mind get my head around it!). Wondering how people managed under a local anesthetic?

Hello,

Eye surgery tends to be done under local. This is so the patient can go home rather than have a general where they may need to stay at the hospital, possibly overnight, until they come around from the surgery.

The only time a general tends to be considered would be if the person is nervous and may find it difficult to stay still, or they have a medical issue such as Parkinson's or MS.

I had my trab under local anaesthetic. I won't lie, it wasn't the most pleasant experience of my life but it wasn't painful. Its definitely the thought of what's happening that stresses most people out with this operation and the fact rhat you have to lie still for a long time. I have also had 3 surgeries on my eyes done under local anaesthetic and on each occasion I went home the same day. The general anaesthetic did make me feel tired but I found it easier to cope with psychologically than the local. Having said that I am in general good health and not vèry elderly (early sixties). I think surgeons have different preferences as well. My sister had her trab done under a general anaesthetic as her surgeon prefers to work in this way.

You will be fine under local. I had it done and was really scared but they are very good at the op now and I didn’t have much discomfort at all. It is draining ok though had to have a needling again under local but it has helped my pressures a lot, the eye was at 65 following a faulty lens procedure - all down to the manufacturing process abd not the hospital - but now is 14 though did get damage at 65 but I can see well.

I’ve had two trabs done, both with local anaesthetic, but I also had some light sedation given via a cannula in my hand. I was very nervous and this did really help me relax. Maybe speak to your doctor about sedation, it definitely was the best option for me.

hi i had two trabeculectomy done under general anaesthetic. You will feel tired for a few days. It was a day surgery so was home a few hours after the operation. The only time i had sedation and local anaesthetic was for the needling procedure. That wasn’t a pleasant experience.
