Any tips on coping with problems with reading?

Hello everyone,I have a sense of foreboding at the moment as I'm beginning to have problems with some kinds of reading. In particular, using the calculator on my phone. I have some blind areas near my central vision. My acuity is fine, but when I look at the top numbers on the calculator I can't see the bottom line and vice versa. Same applies sideways. This is a change from 6 months ago. I have normal tension glaucoma and a trabeculectomy is in the cards if deterioration starts happening

Has anyone got any tips about gadgets to help with reading? There seem to be aids that magnify, but I feel I want to make the page smaller, so that more if it fits into my area of vision. Does that make sense?

I would say if you have had a change in your vision you ought to get in touch with the consultant. I’m fine with reading but when I do the distance eye check I have to keep moving my head to get each line in sight….

I agree if Iona57 hasn’t been seen by her consultant in last 6 mths she should notify of this new change . 👍🏻

Issue can be the tests don’t show a change but you just perceive one. That’s a tricky one. I know I’m in that position.

Following your post for replies as I have similar issues and similar diagnosis with para central vision loss in right dominant eye.

Thank you for your replies. I saw my consultant at the end of July, but he noticed a bleed was starting around my optic nerve which can mean there is risk of deterioration. I'm due to see him again at end of October. I'll get in touch with his secretary and find out when he is back from his hols I could also ask my lovely local optician to take a look.

What treatment have you had Beecalmed?

Hi Iona57!

I’ve lost some vision in a patch right eye top paracentral. I had lost vision at diagnosis. Patch grew in first year after diagnosis. I was diagnosed 5 years ago.

Despite taking maximum dose and a combination of drops for preceding 2yrs, I was having regular retinal bleeds in right eye, so 2yrs ago had SLT in right eye. Considered not to have worked. First discussion of possible Trab. Consultant decided to try SLT in left eye last July. Deemed a success as IOPs down in low teens in both eyes. Last check at private optician (with glaucoma specialism) pressures back up to 18 but no sign of bleeds or progression on tests. Being monitored by hospital consultant team roughly every 6 mths (in addition to 6mthly private checks as keeping my own records and scans) so should have another hospital check soon…unless delayed.

Thank you Beecalmed. It's good to hear that things seem to have stabilised at the moment, and you have avoided a team so far! Long may it continue!
