Cornea Thickness

Hi, this forum has been very helpful and I’ve learnt a lot about glaucoma since I was diagnosed this year.

At my last appointment my consultant said I had thin corneas, but didn’t tell me the exact measurements. I understand this may indicate the pressure reading is not accurate, and the reading I have been getting after starting drops (15/16) may be higher, but roughly how much variation might there be?

Thanks,

Jon

Hello Jon1988

Eye pressure naturally fluctuates throughout the day, but only slightly. The drops will be helping to maintain it.

The eye pressure taken at the eye clinic is more precise against the reading done at an opticians.

Consultants sometimes use a table, which help them convert corneal thickness measurements into an "adjustment factor." This adjustment is applied to the measured IOP, in order to determine more closely the "true" IOP

Hi Jon1988

I too have thin corneas, which I am told is a high risk for glaucoma (I have had two trabs). The pressure readings tend to be lower than they actually are if you have thin corneas, although I don’t know how much the variation is. All I have been told is that the medics will always want your pressures on the low side of normal, to allow for that. Sorry I can’t be more helpful but I too am curious about this!
