Sore eyelid

Hi all following on from a previous post ..I had a bad reaction to Lumigan drops and after a call to the hospital they put me back on Monopost which i had taken previously for 5 years with no issues. I've also been on Cosopt pf for a year. My eyelids were very sore and itchy when I stopped the Lumigan almost 2 weeks ago but thought this would clear up. I've not worn make up or contacts during this time. I now find that my eyelid and around my tearduct is still red and puffy and very, very itchy. I phoned my gp who said they don't recommend anything for sore eyes except hot/cold compress. They no longer treat blepharitis with anything. I've been doing this twice daily and using gentle Vaseline at night. My eye is more sore than ever now. Could it be an infection...what should I do? I have no problems at all with my other eye. Should I get back to the gp on Monday? Ring the hospital ( again) or what. So worried. To top it all i am having a painful wisdom tooth out on Monday morning. Feeling sorry for myself. Thank you.

Hi Ethelpledge! Sorry to hear you’re suffering! Are you in contact with your opticians? I ask as any good opthalmologist at your local optician worth their salt should be able to tell you if it’s an infection; dry eye related, something else or nothing to worry about. If it’s something to investigate further they will also write to your consultant at the hospital to suggest you be seen, which speeds things up. Many opticians/opthamologists also have free clinics that you may be eligible for. I’ve used this route twice and in each case it helped to have my ophthalmologist confirm my concerns about my eyes were legitimate and bypass my GP, who still have long delays due to covid backlog. Hope that helps. Good luck with the wisdom tooth too! Tooth pain is enough to drive anyone to dispair. On that, I recommend a bag of frozen peas, wrapped in a tea towel, held to the cheek of the extraction site in order to relieve a bit of pain and swelling. 👍🏻

Oh that sounds very unpleasant and uncomfortable and as it isn't clearing up but getting worse I would certainly seek further advice, even to give you peace of mind. Are you experiencing any sensitivity to light or green/ yellow discharge as I know they are definitely signs of an infection. My consultant explained what to look out for after my trab.

I wouldn't leave it till Monday, even if you call your opticians I've always found mine very helpful or the eye clinic if they are open.

A sore tooth as well, poor you ,I would be feeling sorry for myself too. Take care and let us know how you get on . X

Hi Witchie346 thanks for your reply also. No sensitivity and no discharge thank goodness. No Change to my sight either. I'd have been directly to the hospital if there was. As I told Beecalmed I have found the Blephawipes helpful today . I'll see how my eye Is tomorrow. If no better I'll pop down to the.opthalmologist at Specsavers. I've always found them very helpful. Thanks again.

I'm glad that you've found something that's helped a bit today. I hope your eye has improved by tomorrow but if not going to Specsavers sounds like a good idea. Good luck with tooth extraction on Monday .

When my eyes get inflamed I use a product called eyebag, it's a reusable eye mask you put in the microwave and place on your eyes.

I find it great to get rid of irritation and also really soothes dry eye.

Hi Ethelpledge, I get very sore and red around my eyes if it’s windy - I live near the sea so I think it’s to do with the wind making my eyes water and the salt reacting with my eye drops. I have to wear goggles to swim for the same reason. Anyway once I have it, it won’t clear up on its own. my GP prescribed a very low dose hydrocortisone cream (5%) which I have to use very sparingly - it’s really not meant to be used around your eyes but it is the only thing that works for me. So as a last resort maybe you could go back to GP and ask again. Hope it gets better soon.

Oops that’s 0.5 % hydrocortisone it’s the lowest dose you can get.

Thank you so much to everyone who has replied to my post. Early days but my eye has responded really well to the Blephaclean wipes. They've certainly stopped the itching which was driving me mad ! The redness has subsided a lot overnight so here's hoping! I'm so grateful to you all. Two questions that maybe you can help me with. Why did my GP tell me that she would not prescribe Blephasol as it had proved ineffective? Is this the case across the country? These products are made by Thea who are very reputable with eye care products. Secondly what does everyone use as a safe, effective moisturiser around your eye area? I've always used Nivea but worried about putting anything around my eyes now I've experienced this. I'm know the Lumigan caused it in the first place but want to be extra careful in future. Thank you again .

It might be the fact that you can buy Blephasol over the counter. I have always done this, as I didn’t know it might be possible to get it on prescription! I use brinzolamide/timolol twice a day and Bimatoprost once, plus dry eyes drops (the ones I am using at the moment are Thealoz duo) so my eyelids definitely need to be kept clean and the Blephasol obviously helps! The Blephasol lotion is not cheap but I find a bottle lasts for ages.

That's great the wipes seem to be working well, with luck your eye will keep improving . Regarding use of moisturiser round your eye area, I would be feeling a bit apprehensive too, something completely organic might be your best bet. Neals Yard or Holland and Barrett, they both have great ranges. I use Liz Earle ,I have for years and I've never had any issues . I prefer natural beauty ranges that are cruelty free.

Take care and enjoy the rest of your Sunday x

Hello. So appreciate the recommendations too as I struggle with very itchy eyes too. Just ordered some wipes. I have also been taking Puriton which seems to help. I think the drops are starting to cause a rash around my eyes too, so I've been using sudocreme as a barrier. Good luck with the dentist. I'm fast learning that the treatment for glaucoma is as tricky to live with as the disease itself. Sending positive vibes for a sunny Sunday

Agree. It's a fabous community and so reassuring to be able to share experiences/ get advice and support. I've really appreciated the Glaucoma UK webinars too. I've learned so much about the condition which really helps. Glaucoma seems to find a way to seep into all aspects of life just now and all this sure helps

Hi everyone just an update. My wisdom tooth came out yesterday no problem I didn't feel a thing. No pain after either. Fab dentist. Hopefully my eye is clearing up slowly. I bought the Blephasol wipes and solution and they appear to be working. Specsavers tool a quick look and said they believed it is blepharitis and warm compress is what they'd advise too . So here's hoping. So many upsetting posts on here recently. My heart goes out to everyone struggling. Best wishes x

That's great your tooth extraction didn't hurt, it must have been a relief to have it over and done with. Fingers crossed your eye keeps improving too . X
