Lancashirelass07 profile image

amitriptyline,. GP has prescribed this for me ,to help with neck pain and migraine. Anyone else taking it , and is it safe. Dr. Said it's ok. , But it's not him who has glaucoma.

Also suffering with dizziness,. He has also prescribed Cinnerizine not really happy with those either.

I’ve been taking amitriptyline for a long time due to nerve damage in my leg. Depending on dose you have to take it at night as it can really knock you out. Doctors I’ve seen about my eyes over the last couple of years haven’t said there’s any issues with taking this and my eye drops.

I wish all doctors agreed with one another. I was prescribed amitriptylline many years ago, for sleeplessness. I had a similar episode more recently and was told I could only be given a small number of the tablets, due to them being highly addictive! No-one has mentioned the effect on glaucoma, but then even ophthalmologists don’t seem to know the same things or offer the same advice. 🙁

I believe amitryptiline and other antidepressants in this class can raise intra-ocular pressure. I refused it for this reason when my GP suggested it for back pain. I would check with your ophthalmologist.

Thanks

I've looked into this before and from memory I think the glaucoma risk with amitryptyline was specifically with acute angle glaucoma and not open angle glaucoma.

Thanks for info. Still not sure, your eyes are too prescious to mess about with.

I have glaucoma and been taking amitriptyline for many years, my consultant did not think it would cause the pressure to increase. I also have recently had a problem with neck pain and dizziness since the beginning of November, but during the last 3 days the neck pain and dizziness have improved but it has taken a long time. I was also prescribed cinnerizine but stopped after a couple of days because I experienced nasty side effects. My GP was unsure if the dizziness was due to the neck or labyrinthitis, an ear disorder. I was sure it was the neck. Hope the information is helpful for you

Yes they are exactly my symptoms.what have you done the last few days to feel better. ? My dizziness and neck ate driving me mad ,so miserable.

Time is the answer, it’s taken about 7 weeks for the pain to ease in my neck and hey presto the dizziness eased as well. I used heat, ice and paracetamol in the early days. Turning my head slowly, particularly in bead helped. Practicing good posture and avoiding bending the head too much eg. When you’re reading and sewing, avoiding long periods in the same position. I also saw a cranial osteopath but was treated for labyrinthitis which made the symptoms far worse and spent the day/night suffering with vertigo where the room was spinning. Unfortunately, I couldn’t take any anti inflammatory medication due to other health issues but I certainly would recommend trying if you are able to. It has been very difficult and extremely unpleasant. I’m not sure how long you have been suffering with these symptoms but time is the healer, for me anyway. Just take one day at a time and try not to put to much pressure on yourself. Hope you find this helpful

Thanks Odta,. You seem to be the same as me I can't take anti inflammatory meds either. Have tried heat patches and deep freeze rubs. I also think it could be posture related. Or to much reading / computer work I find these Cinnerizine tables make me so tired,. I cannot see me taking them for long. I have been struggling about six weeks now. Hope you are right ,. Maybe ,hopefully another few days. It is awful feeling dizzy. Let's hope the New Year brings better health. Best wishes to you ,when it comes. Thanks .

Have you heard about the booklet written by a physiotherapist called Robin McKenzie ? "Treat your own neck" ? the author gives a lot of very sensible advice and exercises.

I had two frozen shoulders years ago and this book was such a help.

He has also written " Treat your own back" in the same sort of format and equally useful.

Many physiotherapists know and recommend these books.

Best wishes

No I haven't heard of that,my nerve pain is in my calf,my GP said she thinks it's a trapped or damaged nerve somewhere but can't tell where,so my body is getting mixed pain messages and getting nerve pain in my calf when there's actually nothing wrong with my calf. Its strange?

So sorry chris4146, I think it was Odta with neck pain, and as my name suggests....I got muddled. Have you spoken to a physio about your nerve pain ? They are often very helpful.
