Glaucoma - Intractable eye pain

My daughter Natasha has closed angle glaucoma with apparently Pigmentary Dispersion Syndrome. She has had one operation to reduce the ciliary bodies because her intraocular pressures were getting progressively higher. This worked very well, and pressures are now well controlled. She takes her eye drops routinely in exactly the prescribed manner, and the vision is now stable. The problem is she has unrelenting eye pain. Has anyone with glaucoma, suffering from really bad pain found a solution to this? Doctors in clinic are a bit dismissive. She is at her wits end!

Hi, sorry to hear about your daughter's eyes and the pain she is experiencing. I too have had this and was finally told it could be due to dry eye, which unfortunately lots of glaucoma eye drops can cause. Has she tried some lubricant eye drops - your pharmacist or doctor should be able to recommend some. Best to get preservative free. Hopefully her glaucoma eye drops are preservative free? At the moment for dry eye, I am using Hycosan Fresh three times a day, then before I go to bed Xalin Night, which is a thick gel. It makes the eyes blurry but after being washed out in the morning the eyes become clear again. I find both these are helping me. Worth a try and if it works for your daughter you could try to see if the doctor will put them on repeat prescription. Wishing her all the best. x

Thank you, I have sent off for the eye ointment. Her pain may be related dry eye. I'll update if it makes her life better.. thanks for the reply..

Fingers crossed that it works for her. If not definitely get in touch with the consultants secretary and if necessary kick up a fuss. This really needs to be sorted out for her.

Hello NackJich2

I'm sorry your daughter is going through so much discomfort. If the pain is constant and affecting her on a daily basis it is important that you call the eye secretary or the consultants secretary if she knows the name of her consultant and tell them. They can relay it back to the consultant and get back to you especially if this has only started happening since the operation.

Thanks Trish. I think this has been ongoing for years. She has raised the issue in clinic. Going to up the dry eye regime and raise it again next time..
