Does anyone experience excessive floaters in the eye?

Sunshine88888888 profile image

Over the years I have experienced floaters in my eyes of various shapes and sizes. Two weeks ago I had my second cataract operation, over the last few I’m experiencing floaters which are more akin to black rain drops! Now and again they can make me jump, as it appears on looking down my top is covered with mini black insects crawling over me! I’ve also noticed the amount of them can vary considerably, sitting calmly here indoors there doesn’t appear to be as many however walking earlier on outside it may as well be raining black dots! Any advice, suggestions, experience to share I would be very grateful 😊

Hi Sunshine

It`s probably nothing to worry about but might be worth having it checked. If I was you I would ring the Hospital Eye Clinic for advice. If nothing else it will at least put your mind at rest.

Had floaters for around 60 years, usually worm like things, but just these past couple of years i have had what appears to be like a line round one side and the bottom of my eye and it sort of vibrates, often get the feeling something is crawling on my chest, but of course nothing there. Get flashes when looking at the sky at night as well.

Oh wow bless you! Freaks me out thinking something is crawling on my chest! So maybe this is something I’m just going to experience from now on. Thank you for sharing x

Hi. I have experienced what looks like small black insects - but only when I am in the bathroom and they appear on the windowsill. This has only happened since having my first cataract op two weeks ago. I also have flashes - something like when the sun shines on a piece of glass, when looking i the bathroom mirror at night with the light on. Hate it. I did mention it on my check up last week but was met with blank stares! Going again Monday week so will mention it again. Think it must be due to the lens settling in after the op, so really hope it clears up soon for all of us who are experiencing this phenomenon. x

Thank you so much for letting me know, my op was two weeks ago as well. I’m a telephone follow up on Monday which worries me as I would like my pressures checked. That’s the first question I’m going to ask them and about the floaters x

Hope you get your pressures checked soon. I had mine done last Monday (a week after the cataract op). The right eye (which had the op) was down to 24 from 40 (although pre-op it was 15) and the doctor said that was to be expected as I was taking steroid drops. The pressure in the left eye was 29 instead of 40 (which again was only 15 pre-op) and I am now having to take extra drops of a different brand three times a day plus the Monopost at night in the left eye. Pressures are going to be rechecked Monday week. Would be interested to know how you get on with explanation for the black dots.

After my recent three eye operations, the last one being a cataract removal, I noticed floaters. I'd never had them before and they've now disappeared completely. I can't tell you how long after surgery this happened because it was rather like having a cough. One day you notice it's not there any more. However, based on my experience, all should be well. My consultant just said they were normal and everyone gets them but I think they were the result of disturbance caused by surgery which has now settled down.

Oh Sunshine that certainly sounds off putting, I do sometimes get floaters but just a couple of small black dots and only when I'm not wearing glasses and outside. It probably isn't anything but definitely mention it tomorrow even if only to reassure yourself. A telephone consultation isn't ideal and I know the urge to know your pressure is there but I didn't get my pressure taken till 4 weeks after my cataract op and that was going private, so I'm assuming that's the norm.

How are you apart from your weird floaters ? Well I hope x

Hi Witchie I’ve got my questions ready yet again for tomorrow, just longing for my eyes to settle and also get the biopsy out the way. I’m struggling just a little at the moment sure it’s just a dip and things will change for the better in September. Hope your well too x

Oh I know it does get to the point when you think this is never ending and you get beyond fed up. Another couple of weeks and that should be you at least for cataracts. Did you say you still had laser as well as biopsy ? This has been a pretty rubbish year but I always tell myself at least you are receiving treatment, which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I'm sure it is a wee blip and you will get there again. You just need all the eye stuff out of the way and your eyes settled and then breathe.I think I'm doing my partner's head in at moment as whenever my family or friends mention making future plans I'm not sure as I've no idea when my eye op will be. I see him stressing whenever I say the word trabeculectomy !!!!

I've not had a phone consultation but they are definitely becoming more the norm now but for things like glaucoma it's not really great. At least you are prepared with your questions. Hope it goes ok. Let us know what they say about your floaters . X
