This should be of concern to everyone. The DSM-5 is used as a diagnostic tool and will effect benefits paid out. It also may keep very ill people from getting the proper diagnosis. "One in six cancer and coronary disease patients met the criteria for DSM-5 'Somatic Symptom Disorder.' "

I Urge everyone to read this article and pass it along for others.

Mislabeling Medical Illness As Mental Disorder

The eleventh DSM 5 mistake needs an eleventh hour correction.

Published on December 8, 2012 by Allen J. Frances, M.D. in DSM5 in Distress

"A person will meet the criteria for SSD by reporting just one bodily symptom that is distressing and/or disruptive to daily life and having just one of the following three reactions to it that persist for at least six months: 1) 'disproportionate' thoughts about the seriousness of their symptom(s); or 2) a high level of anxiety about their health; or, 3) devoting excessive time and energy to symptoms or health concerns.

The funniest thing of all is that I, a "conversion disorder patient", see doctors more rarely than HEALTHY people do, show much less health anxiety than HEALTHY people do (just because, unlike healthy people, I got used to being sick all the time and to no attention from doctors, as well), miss fewer workdays than healthy people do (just because I have no idea when and if I ever become better). I have been sick for 8 years, I am now weak from head to toe, can not cross the room without a cane and use a walker outside - yet, when I do come to see a doctor, I am always told "how lucky you are not to have an organic disease". I feel like we, the "lucky" ones, are going to grow in numbers after this new DSM5 edition.
